Dans cet article, l’auteur expose le cheminement qui l’a mené d’une « ethnologie de Bailleurs », la tradition ethnologique qui s’est développée dans le cadre colonial dans le souci d’une connaissance de l’altérité maxima, à une « ethnologie de l’ici ». Gérard Althabe présente son expérience de chercheur dans des terrains relevant du présent de la société française. Cette démarche introduit une rupture avec la tradition qui amenait l’ethnologue à choisir ses sujets au plus loin de lui, en se dissociant de son objet d’étude. Au contraire, dans les situations locales et contemporaines, l’implication de l’ethnologue devient elle-même l’instrument de la production de la connaissance, car la place de l’ethnologue dans ses échanges avec les gens est définie de manière particulière dans les diverses situations en fonction de son appartenance sociale. Le chercheur, pris comme témoin, est entraîné dans une perspective particulière et l’interprétation de l’entretien doit investir cette dimension. Cette démarche vise à construire le sens tel qu’il se dégage des échanges, l’événement de rencontre étant l’unité d’interprétation.

In this article, the author traces the thought process which led him from an “ethnology of the elsewhere”, that is, the colonial tradition which sought to attain the knowledge of “complete othemess”, toward an “ethnology of the here”. Gérard Althabe presents his research experience in fields relevant to contemporary French society. This approach represented a break with the ethnological tradition which had caused him to select his research subjects from far afield, thus distancing himself from his subjects. By contrast, in local and contemporary situations, the author becomes an instrument in the production of knowledge, since his role in diverse social exchanges is a function of his membership in the very French milieu he is studying. Thus, as an active participant and witness, the researcher’s own perspective becomes an intrinsic component of the research. This approach aims to construct meaning from the author’s social interactions in contemporary French society, with the social exchanges themselves serving as the unit of interpretation.

This article discusses the challenges of assembling and teaching a course on vernacular religion in an Institute of Religious Studies. The interface of folklore and folklife studies with religious studies in the classroom offers rich opportunities for students to learn about the lived religion of others as well as themselves.

Dans ce cours, l’interface études de folklore/études religieuses présente aux étudiants de nombreuses opportunités d’appréhender les pratiques religieuses des autres autant que les leurs.

Two particular problems are the focus of this article. One is that nations differ dramatically not only with regard to the ethnic diversity within their borders and the diversity politics pursued, but also with regard to the ways in which folklore scholars understand diversity, nationalism, and internationalism. The other concerns the differences between nations according to the premises for and the ideals of scholarship. These problems and issues are illustrated through sketches comparing history and folklore scholarship in four different countries: Estonia, Sweden, the United-States and Mali. We emphasize that folklorists in small or “peripheral” countries tend to acknowledge and analyze the role of folkloristics in shaping the symbols of their own nation, whereas contemporary folklorists in the “Occidental heartland”, i.e. the United States, seldom acknowledge the links between their own work and nation building. We argue that there is a hidden nation discourse in folklore study in the United States. But because this discourse is so inclusive of ethnic diversity, it seems far more international and open to the world beyond itself than it actually is. The article concludes with a plea for folklorists from all parts of the world to come together outside the anglophone institutions in the West, in order to examine critically their premises for scholarship and their notions of excellence and scholarly power.

Deux types de problèmes font l’objet de cet article. Le premier est que les nations diffèrent considérablement, non seulement en ce qui concerne la diversité ethnique à l’intérieur de leurs frontières et les politiques de la diversité qu’elles mènent, mais aussi en ce qui concerne la manière dont les ethnologues appréhendent la diversité, le nationalisme et l’internationalisme. Le second relève des différences entre les nations quant aux prémisses et aux idéaux du savoir universitaire. Ces problèmes et questions sont illustrés par des esquisses comparatives de l’histoire des études de folklore dans quatre pays différents : l’Estonie, la Suède, les États-Unis et le Mali. L’accent est mis sur le fait que les ethnologues des petits pays, ou pays en périphérie, ont tendance à reconnaître et à analyser le rôle des études de folklore dans la formation des symboles de leur propre nation, tandis que les ethnologues contemporains du cœur de l’Occident, c’est-à-dire les États-Unis, reconnaissent rarement les liens entre leur propre travail et la construction de la nation. Nous indiquons l’existence d’un discours nationaliste occulté dans les études de folklore aux États-Unis. Mais puisque ce discours englobe la diversité ethnique, il paraît beaucoup plus internationaliste et ouvert sur le monde qu’il ne l’est en réalité. Cet article se termine par un plaidoyer pour que les ethnologues de partout au monde se rassemblent en dehors des institutions anglophones de l’Occident pour examiner de manière critique les prémisses du savoir et les notions d’excellence et de pouvoir universitaire.

Dans le rapport entre le chercheur et l’objet de la connaissance, que ce rapport s’exerce sur le mode de la certitude du soi, ou bien sur le mode de son incertitude et de la nature relationnelle entre le soi et l’autre, la production de la distance est un trait constant en ethnologie, en anthropologie, en histoire, mais aussi dans toutes les disciplines des sciences humaines. Dans la quête de l’autre, c’est l’identité, donc la connaissance du soi, qui est le véritable enjeu. L’auteur évoque l’inversion épistémologique qui consisterait à mettre en avant l’objet du savoir, dont la construction est masquée par la Méthode dans le cadre disciplinaire. Partir de l’objet consiste à assumer un pluralisme disciplinaire dont les savoirs partiels n’ont pas à être unifiés, mais plutôt rassemblés, pour pouvoir comparer les points de vue, sachant que le savoir social n’est ni cumulatif, ni définitif. Il n’est qu’une configuration instable de connaissances partielles, mais qui peuvent prendre l’universel pour horizon idéel.

The relationship between researcher and subject is a crucial component of any ethnological study. Whether or not this relationship is conducted on the model of certainty of the self vs. the uncertainty of the self and of the relation between the self and the other, the resulting production of distance is a constant in ethnology, anthropology and history as well as in the humanities. In the quest to study the other, it is identity or the knowledge of oneself that is the true goal. The author invokes the epistemological inversion which consists of foregrounding the object of knowledge, the construction of which is then masked by the method within the disciplinary framework. Foregrounding the object of knowledge assumes a disciplinary pluralism whose individual components cannot be unified but only assembled in order to compare perspectives. This is done with the recognition that social knowledge is neither cumulative nor definitive. Rather, the result is a shaky conglomeration of partial knowledges which can only strive toward a more universal goal.

This article reflects on the editorial experience of collection and compilation in the generation of a CD-ROM about the traditional culture of Northern Scotland: Northem Folk (Aberdeen: The Elphinstone Institute, 1999), coedited by Valentina Bold and Tom McKean, under the general editorship of James Porter. As well as outlining the collaborative nature of the project (in terms of funding, archivai sources and specially-conducted interviews), it surveys the contents of Northern Folk, highlighting the advantages, and pitfalls, in multi-media publication. The writer reflects, too, on her current project: a companion volume exploring the traditional culture of Southern Scotland. Sharing her experience of such a project, Valentina Bold can make recommendations for the publication of future CD-ROMs dealing with ethnological material.

This article discusses the challenges and strengths faced by a Folklorist teaching in a Kinesiology Department. It specifically focuses on a fieldwork assignment in a History of Sport class, where students were required to collect oral histories of sport from within their communities. The author discusses how, as a professor, he legitimized this exercise to the students, the students’ response to it, and the outcome of the research exercise. He intends to illustrate how folklore principles in the classroom achieve a greater understanding of the cultural value of sport, but also generate greater interest in the subject matter at hand.

Cet article expose les difficultés et les défis auxquels a dû faire face un ethnologue enseignant dans un département de kinésiologie. Elle traite plus particulièrement du travail de terrain demandé dans un cours d’histoire du sport, où les étudiants ont été appelés à collecter des histoires orales de sport au sein de leur communauté. L’auteur raconte la manière dont, en tant que professeur, il a justifié cet exercice auprès des étudiants, les réactions des étudiants et les résultats obtenus. Il démontre ainsi comment les principes de l’ethnologie dans la salle de cours permettent une meilleure compréhension de la valeur culturelle du sport, mais aussi comment ils suscitent un plus grand intérêt vis-à-vis de la matière du cours.

In this historiographic account, the author distinguishes between two different voices in the development of folklore as a discipline in Québec. Since the beginning of folklore studies in 19th century thinking, researchers have divided in two camps: exponents of oral tradition (seen as a heritage on its way to extinction), and exponents of material culture. This divergence can be seen in the work of Edouard Massicotte, Marius Barbeau, J.M. Gauvreau and Robert-Lionel Séguin. With the work of Luc Lacourcière, folklore began to be seen as an indivisible whole. Looking at the careers of the main figures in the discipline, the author shows how their perspectives eventually meet in a new approach.

Depuis les origines des études de folklore dans le courant du XIXe siècle, les chercheurs se sont divisés en deux camps, entre les tenants de la tradition orale, considérée comme un patrimoine en voie de disparition, et les tenants de la culture matérielle. Cette scission est visible dans les travaux successifs d’Edouard Massicotte, Marius Barbeau, J.M. Gauvreau et Robert-Lionel Séguin. A partir des travaux de Luc Lacourcière, le folklore commence à être compris comme un tout indissociable. En examinant le parcours des principales figures de la discipline, l’auteur démontre comment ces parcours distancés finissent par se rejoindre dans une nouvelle approche.
