About

Presentation

Founded in 1988, the journal Nouvelles pratiques sociales (NPS) provides a space for research, critical reflection, and knowledge dissemination on social inequalities, the dynamics of social marginalization and precariousness, and the related models of social intervention. The objective is to contribute to the development of democratic innovations in the social practices – taking place in both institutional (State-based) and community settings – by publishing peer-reviewed research papers and critical analyses in the areas of social intervention and community-based, collective, and militant social action and citizenship. More broadly, NPS examines the social issues that social work is meant to address.

NPS aims to promote pluralism of ideas, critical thinking, and enlightened discussions within the social intervention field and across society. It encourages collaboration among researchers and practitioners so as to meet the demands of both scientific rigour and social relevance. NPS has historic and institutional ties to the École de travail social de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), where its premises are located. NPS receives subsidies from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

All issues published since 1988 are available in open access on the Érudit platform. Issues published since 2016 are available online only.

For more information about NPS, please see the journal’s website (in French only).

Editorial policy and ethics

Twice yearly, Nouvelles pratiques sociales (NPS) publishes double-blind peer-reviewed research articles and critical analyses in the areas of social intervention and community-based, collective, and militant social action and citizenship. More broadly, it also covers the social issues that social work is meant to address.

Publication language

NPS publishes articles in French. However, on an exceptional basis and at the express request of the Editorial Board, a paper can be published in English. NPS does not provide support for translation.

How to submit a paper proposal

To submit a paper to NPS, please consult the Appels à contributions (Calls for papers) webpage for upcoming issues. The submission process is explained in detail on the Comment soumettre (How to submit) webpage (in French only).

All proposed papers must be submitted on the NPS web publishing platform and must conform to the journal’s presentation standards. By submitting your paper, you agree to abide by the journal’s publication policy and anti-plagiarism policy, as stated below.

For more information about the submission process, please contact us.

Paper review process

The review process for papers submitted to NPS will vary according to the section. A detailed description is provided on the Processus d’évaluation (Review process) webpage (in French only).

Only research papers submitted to the Dossier and Perspectives sections will be subjected to an external double-blind review. Papers submitted to other sections will be reviewed internally according to rigorous procedures and using a comprehensive evaluation grid.

Publication policy

Policies for copyright, publication rights, and author self-archiving

The original author(s) owns the copyright to the intellectual property for the created work.

The author(s) agrees to grant the journal Nouvelles pratiques sociales (NPS) the exclusive right to publish. The submitted paper must not have been previously published and must not be pending for review elsewhere. In addition, once the paper has been submitted to NPS, the author(s) agrees not to publish the paper in another journal.

The author(s) retains the copyright. The author(s) licences the right of first publication to NPS. The author(s) also grants NPS the right to non-exclusive reproduction and distribution of the paper. This means that the author(s) authorizes NPS the right to freely distribute the paper with no time or geographic limits.

One year after publication of the paper, the author(s) may post it on a personal or professional webpage and may deposit it in an institutional or central repository. For this purpose, the author(s) must use the digital file provided by NPS, following a standard NPS format.

Should the author(s) wish to publish the paper in a book or other work after it appears in NPS, the author(s) must mention the original publication of the paper in NPS and provide the reference.

All authors and co-authors of articles published in NPS must declare, in a written statement, that they are the original author(s) of the paper and that the submission of the paper for publication in NPS does not infringe on the rights of any third party.

Anti-plagiarism policies

Nouvelles pratiques sociales enforces a strict anti-plagiarism policy. Published papers must present an original contribution and respect the intellectual propriety rights of others. Plagiarism happens when an author intentionally omits to provide references and reproduce, in part or in totality, the work of others thus failing to acknowledge their contribution. In addition, the journal does not allow for acts of self-plagiarism that happen when authors, in part or in an extensive fashion, uses previously published accounts of their own work without mentioning the source in a specific and clear manner.

To guarantee that every published paper is an original work and is exempt of any form of plagiarism, Nouvelles pratiques sociales:

  • Informs the author of the existence and the nature of the anti-plagiarism policy when a paper is submitted for review.
  • Performs a preliminary check of all the submission before the beginning of the review process.
  • Signs a contract with the author where this person states that he or she is the owner of the intellectual rights of the submitted paper and that it does not infringe on the rights of others.
  • Performs an in-depth examination of every paper once it is accepted for publication.

When an act of plagiarism is detected, at every step of the publication process, Nouvelles pratiques sociales enforces the following measures:

  • The journal communicates immediately with the author.
  • If plagiarism is limited to a small and specific section of the text, the author must correct and write a new version of the text and indicate clearly the sources and references in conformity with the accepted and usual rules.
  • If plagiarism is important (more than 20% of the contents), the paper is rejected and cannot be submitted again.
  • If the plagiarism is important (more than 20% of the contents) and the text has already been published, the paper will be removed from the on-line publication. The journal reserves the right to reject any other submission from the same author.

Sustainable archiving policy

Nouvelles pratiques sociales applies a policy for the digital preservation of the published contents. Sustainable archives are maintained through Portico.
