This article explores the tension between sensation and representation in Persian painting, and the role of the line in expressing and embodying the metaphorical possibilities of the medium. Persian painting from the fifteenth century has most often been approached as illustrative, a grid of figures and motifs representing fixed meanings. This paper argues that Persian painting’s system of representation, although seemingly articulated into differentiated signs, cannot be reduced to a pre-given text. Using primary sources that illuminate the terms in which Persian painting and drawing could be described by their historical audiences, I reveal that contemporary viewers were also attentive to the sensory work of the artist, especially visible in the line’s materiality. Examining the lyrical verve of each motif’s contour, the period eye uncovered the artists’ sensation, as well as a series of images linking the line to the artist’s bodily movements, the face of the beloved, and the pursuit of mystical desire.

La muséologie a connu des stades dans son développement qui correspondent à de véritables paradigmes. La muséologie participative, fort en vogue actuellement, n’est pas sans fondements, elle succède à des approches plus classiques qui ont néanmoins favorisé les conditions de son apparition. Les publics n’y ont pas les mêmes rôles et les mêmes implications. La muséologie d’objets, d’idées, de point de vue, la muséologie participative, toutes ces formes déterminent des conditions d’accès différentes. Dès lors, chaque muséologie crée des cibles de publics. Toutefois, si de nouvelles façons et de nouvelles raisons de faire des expositions apparaissent, pour autant les approches plus anciennes ne disparaissent pas. Chacune d’entre elles dessine des sensibilisations différentes, visant des publics plus ou moins élargis et permettant ou non de véritables conditions d’appropriation. Les médiations qui y sont déployées diffèrent. Nous nous intéresserons à ces stades de la muséographie et à ce qu’ils impliquent comme conséquences pour les publics.

In Montréal, the first public demonstration of electric lighting took place in 1879, on the Champ-de-Mars, and was coordinated with a military exercise in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday. At the end of the nineteenth century, modes of experiencing the urban environment by night changed through a series of public demonstrations. These events were ephemeral spectacles designed to expose city dwellers to the unusual effects of electric light. These early experiences with electric light gave rise to new forms of subjectivity that would later be embodied in the everyday spaces of cities. To better understand the impact of electric lighting on the constitution of modern public spaces in Montréal, this article examines the performative nature of the first demonstration in the city in 1879, the role of the main actors involved, and how it was visually represented and disseminated in the press.

À l’aide du livre infâme de Richard Payne Knight, A Discourse on the Worship of Priapus (1786), cet article révèle les moyens entrepris par les antiquaires pour lutter à l’échelle mondiale contre la culture matérielle ancienne. Knight se sert du corpus classique et des techniques de création d’images des antiquaires pour interpréter de manière emblématique les actes sexuels représentés sur les artefacts rapportés en Grande-Bretagne par les employés de la Compagnie britannique des Indes orientales, dont un fragment sculptural associé aux grottes d’Elephanta. En collaboration avec son graveur, Knight transpose le fragment du temple fait de grès en une gravure, un processus qui donne à l’exotique un caractère familier par le recours au langage visuel néoclassique. Knight impose également au lecteur/spectateur de reconsidérer le sens et le mérite esthétique d’oeuvres d’art sexuellement explicites. Bien que son livre Discourse ait renforcé les partis pris coloniaux envers l’Inde et son patrimoine culturel, la méthode comparative de Knight confère une base philosophique à l’érotisme caractérisant l’architecture sacrée en Asie du Sud et souligne l’importance du désir sexuel dans les traditions artistiques anciennes, tant orientales qu’occidentales.
