De (post)modernisme comme deuil. L’Éthique de l’anonymat chez Maurice Blanchot

Résumé

Le postmodernisme se caractérise notamment par le jugement selon lequel notre époque serait celle de la «décomposition des grands récits» (Lyotard). Or Blanchot avait déjà analysé la modernité littéraire comme une fin du Livre et reconnu l'échec de la dialectique hégélienne comme discours de fondation du sujet dans l'histoire. Cette déconstruction l'a conduit à réfléchir sur le travail de deuil de la pensée moderne à l'égard de tout nom, fondateur de l'histoire et du sujet, pour reconnaître justement une nouvelle éthique où le nom de l'Autre doit rester de l'ordre de l'innommable ou de l'anonymat. Cet article est donc à la fois une analyse de cette pensée de l'anonymat en même temps qu'une archéologie de la pensée de Lyotard et du postmodernisme comme pensée et éthique de la différence.

Abstract

Postmodernism has been summed up by Lyotard as the expression of an age characterised by the "dismantlement of long narrative". The statement recalls Blanchot's earlier observation, that modernism marked the end of the Book and the failure of Hegelian dialectic as the underlying discourse of the subject in history. This deconstruction led him to reflect that modern thought despaired of assigning the origin of any subject or historical event to any name. The new ethics called, rather, for recognizing that the name of the Other must remain unnameable and anonymous. This article undertakes, on the one hand, to analyze this notion of anonymity and, on the other, to explore the archaeology of Lyotard's idea of the postmodern as the thought and ethics of difference.
