Musical Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Polissian Region Near Rivne Status and Study

Abstract

The folkloric tradition of the Polissian region near Rivne is archaic, colourful, and comparatively intact into the present. Research in the area has been conducted since the early days of ethnographic studies over two hundred years ago, though the results of such studies are far from sufficient. Three locally specific phenomena which require priority safeguarding and focused research are: the ritual of “visitations with the Kust” (водіння Куста, vodinnia Kusta); the turned wooden flute (дудка-викрутка, dudka-vykrutka); and solo singing (солоспів, solospiv). I provide a general description of these three cultural elements and scholarly research about them. Two of these elements have been added to the National Register, however this sometimes gives specialists and leaders in the cultural sphere an impression that they can now reduce the intensity of work. An appropriately comprehensive knowledge of the element can only be achieved through continued dedicated field expeditions, scholarly articles, and conferences.

La tradition folklorique de la région de la Polésie près de Rivne est archaïque, haute en couleur et relativement intacte jusqu’à nos jours. Des recherches dans ce domaine ont été menées depuis les débuts des études ethnographiques, il y a plus de deux cents ans, même si les résultats de ces études sont loin d’être suffisants. Il y a trois phénomènes localement spécifiques qui nécessitent une sauvegarde prioritaire et des recherches ciblées : le rituel des « visites avec la Kust » (водіння Куста, vodinnia Kusta) ; la flûte en bois tourné (дудка-викрутка, dudka-vykrutka) ; et le chant solo (солоспів, solospiv). Je présente ici une description générale de ces trois éléments culturels et des recherches scientifiques menées à leur sujet. Deux de ces éléments ont été ajoutés au Registre national, mais cela donne parfois l’impression aux spécialistes et aux dirigeants du monde culturel qu’ils peuvent désormais relâcher l’intensité du travail. Une connaissance suffisamment complète de l’élément ne peut être obtenue que grâce à des expéditions continues sur le terrain, des articles scientifiques et des conférences.
