Abstract
Although present everywhere in discourses on Jean Paulhan, the myth of the éminence grise has yet hardly been the subject of analysis. To see what is both hidden and revealed in this lively cliché, the author examines the texts that shaped it and the socio-historical determinations that presided at its emergence. We thereby discover that Paulhan transforms the vagueness inherent in social capital into an enigma to unravel, and that an ethos of the secret drives his narratives and critical works as much as it does his practice of sociability.
