Les photographies monochromes de Carl Zimmerman semblent documenter de grands bâtiments industriels et institutionnels datant de la première moitié du vingtième siècle, et qui sont aujourd’hui abandonnés et marqués par l’usure du temps. Il explore une esthétique architecturale utopiste avec un dosage d’humour, de nostalgie et de déconstruction critique. En fait, l’artiste réalise ses photographies à partir de maquettes qu’il construit dans son petit atelier du Cap-Breton. Dans sa série Lost Hamilton Landmaks, exposée la première fois en 1997, il développait en couleur du film noir et blanc sans autre manipulation, qu’elle soit numérique ou en chambre noire. Dans sa récente série, Landmarks of Industrial Britain, Zimmerman est passé à l’impression à jet d’encre à grande échelle et au montage numérique.

Today's collector is of a new kind: a historian, a restorer of meaning. This figure, the expert collector, shows us where our past is hidden and how we can rediscover it. Such collectors give meaning and historical perspective to everyday objects and convey this meaning to the millions of consumers who use the same objects. They are able to give a new value and content to objects that have been pronounced vain and condemned to destruction. They are champions of microhistory, history that is the size of the human experience of the everyday.

Sur le plan visuel, je m’intéresse aux choses dont se débarrasse notre société, à la façon dont elles s’accumulent laissant derrière elles un paysage apocalyptique qui évoque une sensation de mémoire, tour à tour nette et floue. Cela a à voir avec la douceur et l’angoisse. Le naturel et le non-naturel, le réel et l’imaginaire composent un horizon délavé. Une image de ce que voit le flash de mon appareil-photo. … L’oeuvre est une méditation cyclique; elle n’a ni début ni fin. Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est de rassembler des tessons et fragments sous forme de récit.

This commentary on The Power of the Image, the seventh edition of Mois de la Photo à Montréal, emphasizes the presence this year of three fundamental trends: postcolonialism, deconstruction of the image, and interventions in the public space. Within each of these trends, the author notes the particular interest in certain proposed visions: the Shirin Neshat retrospective, in relation to the postcolonial movement; the projects by Emmanuelle Léonard and Alain Declercq, in relation to interventions in the urban space; and with regard to deconstruction, the video-film installation by Mark Lewis and the photo-video exhibition De quelques rituels masculins.
