Recognizing the richness of multilingual theatre in Canada, this article argues that the choice of non-translation as the absolute staging of multilingual hospitality carries the promise of a more radical cohabitation and offers both critical and reparative encounters with bodies that resist mainstream recuperation. Beyond multicultural accommodation of diversity, non-translation as a politicized choice is examined through examples chosen from contemporary Asian Canadian and Afro-Caribbean Canadian drama, as well as Indigenous performance. Specifically, the article analyzes the deployment of multilingualism “from below” (Alison Phipps’s term) in front of mainstream Anglophone audiences in such plays as debbie young and naila belvett’s yagayah.two.womyn.black.griots , Betty Quan’s Mother Tongue , and Monique Mojica’s Chocolate Woman Dreams the Milky Way . The decolonial practice of non-translation embraced by these playwrights contributes to the trend of “diversifying diversity” and promotes more balanced linguistic ecologies. Rather than softening the hard edges of difference in a global spread of equivalences, multilingualism “from below,” associated with minoritized languages and invisibility, embraces radical heterogeneity and incommensurability, radically confronting the meaning of ethnicized, hyphenated multiculturalism. However, at the same time, these forms of multi-lingualism throw into high relief the selective cultural politics of translation that privileges Canada’s official bilingualism.

Quoique sa langue maternelle soit le français, la Fransaskoise s’identifie davantage comme écrivaine bilingue puisqu’elle rédige ses œuvres en français et en anglais, se livrant à l’autotraduction. Le bilinguisme est une nécessité pour toute personne d’origine fransaskoise puisque sa langue maternelle est trop marginalisée et imperceptible pour qu’il ou elle demeure unilingue, une réalité dont l’auteure tient compte dans ses écrits. La situation linguistique influence ses créations puisqu’elle rédige ses œuvres de façon bilingue et puisqu’elle s’autotraduit afin de cibler différents publics. En observant premièrement les éléments contextuels qui entourent la rédaction de sa pièce La Maculée/sTain (2012) et deuxièmement les éléments textuels qui construisent un bilinguisme dans la pièce et dans le recueil, Sullivan met en lumière la façon dont l’autotraduction occupe une place importante dans l’œuvre de Blais-Dahlem et la façon dont cette pratique permet à l’auteure de surmonter les difficultés liées à l’écriture en contexte minoritaire.

In this article, Sullivan examines the self-translation practice of Fransaksoise playwright Madeleine Blais-Dahlem, born in the small village of Delmas, Saskatchewan. Although her mother tongue is French, Blais-Dahlem considers herself a bilingual author because she writes her texts in both French and English, and translates herself. As Blais-Dahlem explains in her work, Fransaskois are bilingual by necessity, because their mother tongue is so marginalized or imperceptible. The author’s work is influenced by the linguistic situation in the Prairies in that she writes bilingual texts and engages in self-translation to reach different audiences. By observing, firstly, the contextual elements that surrounded the writing of her latest play, La Maculée/sTain (2012), and secondly, the textual elements that construct a bilingual contact in the play and the play script, Sullivan shows how Blais-Dahlem’s self-translation practice is an important part of the author’s work and allows the author to overcome difficulties relating to minority writing.

In this article, Jordão documents the 1991 staging and 2013 publication of her bilingual play Funeral in White . Examining the performance and literary texts, she considers why and how Portuguese and English are used in the play: the conditions that create a space for bilingual theatre and drama in Toronto, the disciplinary requirements of employing two languages on stage and page, and the formal alterations enacted when transitioning from one medium to another. The linguistic dramaturgy of such a project raises several questions. What linguistic conventions will make a Portuguese-English play performable for a cast of English-Canadian actors from a diversity of backgrounds—some who speak Portuguese, others Italian and/or French, and some only English? How will the play be comprehensible to spectators that may be monolingual in English or Portuguese? And, upon publication, will it be accessible to readers who may not master both languages but may have a basic knowledge of Romance languages other than Portugese? Jordão adopts an auto-ethnographic perspective based on her practice to document the playwriting, production, and publication of Funeral in White , and to argue that the sociocultural diversity of theatre makers and spectators is vital to the creation of bilingual theatre.

The translation of theatre from one linguistic and cultural context to another can be uniquely challenging; these challenges are multiplied when the source text is itself multilingual. René-Daniel Dubois’s Ne blâmez jamais les Bédouins, translated into English under the name Don’t Blame the Bedouins by Martin Kevan, unfolds in English, French, Italian, German, Russian, and Mandarin. The original “French” text presents as postdramatic, deconstructing language and identity in a sometimes frenetic pastiche. Kevan’s “Anglophone” text, however, resists the postdramatic deconstruction in the original, instead bulking up Dubois’ macaronic and archetype-heavy collage with some attempts at psychological depth. Because of its polyglossic complexity and because it has been translated, published, and produced in both English and French, it proves an excellent case study that allows for an in-depth analysis of how multilingual theatrical translation can be carried out. I propose that Kevan’s translation of Dubois’ play exhibits not only textual and performative translation, but that he also translates the linguistically-coded aesthetic conventions that distinguish Quebecois and English Canadian drama and their respective audiences. Kevan shows sensitivity to the gap between the politics of language in French and English Canada as well as to the gap between theatrical codes in both linguistic communities by amplifying the psychological realism and consequently tempering the language politics in his “English” version of Dubois’s work. The choices that Kevan made in his translation are here elucidated by borrowing linguistic theories of conversational code-switching to analyze both versions of the play.

Traduire le théâtre d’un contexte linguistique et culturel à un autre est un exercice qui pose toute une série de défis, d’autant plus nombreux quand le texte source est lui-même multilingue. La pièce Ne blâmez jamais les Bédouins de René-Daniel Dubois, traduite en anglais par Martin Kevan ( Don’t Blame the Bedouins ), se déroule en anglais, en français, en italien, en allemand, en russe et en mandarin. Le texte « français » de départ, postdramatique, déconstruit la langue et l’identité pour en faire un pastiche marqué par moments par la frénésie. Le texte « anglais » de Kevan, par contre, résiste à la déconstruction postdramatique du texte de départ, choisissant plutôt de renforcer le collage macaronique et lourd en archétypes de Dubois en tentant d’y apporter une profondeur psychologique. En raison de sa complexité linguistique, et aussi parce qu’il a été traduit, publié et mis en scène en français et en anglais, ce texte polyglossique nous permet d’analyser en profondeur la traduction théâtrale multilingue dans sa mise en œuvre. Dans cet article, Silver propose que la traduction par Kevan de la pièce de Dubois constitue non seulement une traduction textuelle et performative, mais également une transposition des conventions esthétiques codifiées par la langue qui servent à distinguer le théâtre québécois et canadien-anglais et leurs publics respectifs. Selon Silver, Kevan montre une sensibilité à l’endroit du fossé entre les politiques linguistiques du Canada français et du Canada anglais, et aussi entre les codes théâtraux en usage dans les deux communautés linguistiques, lorsqu’il décide d’amplifier le réalisme psychologique de la pièce et, ce faisant, d’adoucir les politiques langagières de la version « anglaise ». En analysant les choix de traduction de Kevan, Silver emprunte aux théories linguistiques de l’alternance codique du discours et étudie en détail la pièce dans ses deux versions.
