Québec theatre abounds with Shakespearean adaptations (not counting translations, another genre entirely). Jean-Pierre Ronfard’s texts contributed significantly to this corpus of adaptations which seek to appropriate “le grand Will” to work through Québécois issues. In Lear (1977) and Vie et mort du Roi Boiteux (1981),we see the evolution of the importance of nationalism and feminism before and after the referendum.The nation is destroyed by Rabelaisian carnival, but carnivalesque death is always associated with regeneration, which, in Ronfard’s works, is entrusted to regal daughters in whom we can find hope for the reconstruction of the nation once its bastardry has been celebrated. Ronfard’s plays also comprise a metafictional critique of Shakespeare himself who literally enacts the theory of the death of the author while giving birth to another Shakespeare who is entirely Québécois.

Merrill Denison’s 1923 play Marsh Hay explores how the pregnancy of an unwed teenager affects her destitute family in rural Ontario. This article offers a new reading of Marsh Hay, arguing that the play critiques and revises normative views about maternity from a liberal feminist perspective. Many of the ideas presented in Marsh Hay can be traced to the playwright’s suffragist mother, Flora MacDonald Denison. There are also several moments in the play that address issues related to motherhood that were particularly topical in the early 1920s. Finally, this article examines the critical responses to the play’s publication as well as to its three known productions to determine how Marsh Hay can provide access to evolving attitudes toward maternity in Canada.

This article examines the status of women in theatre in the early twenty-first century and determines that while there has been some improvement in Canada in the last twenty-five years, women still lag behind men in terms of employment in key creative positions Studies show that only 30-35% of the nation’s artistic directors are female and that this limits the production of work by female playwrights and the hiring of female directors. Problems are further exacerbated where there is limited provincial and corporate funding, as in Atlantic Canada. Little money, combined with a greater likelihood that work by female playwrights will be defined as risky and less attractive for sponsors and mainstream theatres, further restricts opportunities for women in theatre. Women also identify traditional hierarchical practices in the theatre industry and social policies, which fail to provide parental leave for self-employed workers or adequate publicly-funded daycare, as barriers to their participation. While increased government funding would help all theatre professionals, including women, and women can support one another through networking and mentorship, the theatre community must actively identify and change the practices that lead to gender inequity

Burton et Green constatent que s’il y a eu une certaine amélioration au Canada au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années, les femmes qui œuvrent dans ce secteur accusent encore un retard par rapport aux hommes en termes d'emplois dans des positions-clés en création. En effet, des études démontrent que la direction artistique des compagnies canadiennes n’est confiée à une femme que dans 30 à 35 % des cas, ce qui limite la production d’œuvres signées par des dramaturges de sexe féminin et l’embauche de metteures en scène. L’inégalité est d’autant plus exacerbée là où les subventions accordées par l’administration provinciale et issues du secteur privé sont limitées, comme c’est le cas au Canada atlantique par exemple. Le peu de financement, de paire avec l’impression qu’une œuvre signée par une dramaturge constitue un plus grand risque et donc un moins grand attrait pour les subventionnaires et les théâtres populaires, sont des obstacles supplémentaires que doit surmonter la femme en théâtre.

This paper examines Judith Thompson’s Perfect Pie, using Judith Butler’s discussion of subjectivity in The Psychic Life of Power. According to Butler, stability as a subject necessitates a simultaneous recognition and denial of subjugation to power, but this stability is also constantly threatened by desire which promises to destabilize the subject. Desire is therefore thwarted in order to guarantee the subject’s existence. As Butler points out, the process of subject formation resembles melancholia: the subject is never fully able to disengage from the discursive and psychic means by which it is constituted. Thompson, in both the script and in her directorial choices in the Tarragon 2000 production of Perfect Pie, writes large the subordination of the subject and also demonstrates its links to binary oppositions. Thompson highlights the excessive nature of the subject by foregrounding the binary oppositions which govern the psychic and social worlds and by then confounding them, demonstrating the Derridean notion of the trace of the other within the self. In her destabilizing of these binaries, and in her orchestration of narrative, Thompson emphasizes identity as a site of ambivalence in which binaries are relinquished and difference accommodated.

Selon Butler, la stabilité en tant que sujet exige à la fois une reconnaissance de sa soumission au pouvoir et un refus de ce mouvement. Or, cette stabilité est constamment menacée par un désir qui risque de déstabiliser le sujet, et ce désir doit être contré afin de garantir l’existence du sujet. Comme le constate Butler, le processus de formation du sujet ressemble à la mélancolie : le sujet ne peut jamais se détacher entièrement des moyens discursifs et psychiques à l’aide desquels il a été constitué.

Dans les choix qu’elle a fait au moment de l’écriture et de la mise en scène de Perfect Pie au Tarragon en 2000, Thompson illustre la subordination du sujet et montre son rapport aux oppositions binaires. Elle souligne la nature excessive du sujet en plaçant au premier plan les oppositions binaires qui gouvernent les mondes psychiques et sociaux et en les confondant par la suite, illustrant la notion derridienne de la trace de l’Autre en soi. En déstabilisant ces éléments, et en orchestrant ainsi son récit, Thompson montre en quoi l’identité peut être le lieu d’une ambivalence où l’on abandonne les oppositions binaires et où l’on cherche à s’adapter à la différence.

Creatively commingling the life and theories of Canadian media icon Marshall McLuhan may yield robust material for negotiating and staging postmodern performance. This article considers certain of McLuhan’s theories that have parallels to influential postmodern theoretical constructions and the ways in which these parallels are ripe for performance. It considers the uneasy relationship between dramaturgies and dialectics, and deals with frequent criticisms leveled at postmodern thought, including a hectic rejoicing over consumerism, a cacophony of signs, and the dangers of incorporating into performance the mixed-media environments inherent to McLuhanism and postmodernism alike. Finally, the article considers the potential for mixed-media performance to engage with social objectives linked to producing alternative theatre. But it begins and ends by asking the question: Do artists who attempt to stage theory risk allowing the theory to distract from and overwhelm the performance? In order to probe these effects, the sprawling Edmonton science-fiction “Alt-Rock Opera,” The Illumination of Marshall McLuhan, is offered as a case study.

Whittaker s’attarde dans cet article à quelques-unes des théories de McLuhan qu’on peut inscrire en parallèle à des constructions théoriques d’une grande importance en postmodernisme; l’auteur cherche ainsi à voir comment ces parallèles peuvent servir à enrichir une représentation. In his 1995 essay, “Theorizing a Queer Theatre: Buddies in Bad Times,”Robert Wallace suggests that Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is an “imaginative construction” whose “theatrical subjectivity,” like its mandate, is not fixed, but has been constantly evolving since the company began to produce work in 1979 (137). Wallace goes on to argue that Buddies underwent a “literal and figurative reconstruction of [its] theatrical subjectivity” (138) when the company renovated and moved into its current home at the Alexander Street Theatre Project in 1994 and changed its mandate to nominate itself a “queer theatre.” Using Wallace’s essay as a point of departure, I examine the interim decade at Buddies to chart the shifting meaning of the term queer as it has been employed to define the company’s mandate from 1994 to the present.

This article presents the hypothesis that sophisticated psychophysical training is vital for the development of the creative relationship between the performer and the director. Using a fragment of original performance and with reference to training practices drawn from the Chinese martial arts this presentation explains how the author and his collaborator use psychophysical training to facilitate the creation “theatrical opposition.” Originally a live lecture/demonstration, the article is supplemented by numerous illustrations of practical examples of original performance and Chinese martial arts training.
