In this paper, delivered to the Association for Canadian Theatre History during the Learned Societies Conference in May 1991, the Groupe de Recherche sur le Théâtre en Abitibi-Témiscamingue seeks to answer three questions concerning the problems posed by research on regional theatre conducted in remote areas: What is 'regional theatre'? Where does the current debate on the status of regional theatre originate? In what direction does this research appear to be heading? The answers to these questions must obviously take into account geographical factors such as the distance from major urban centres where theatrical activity, and research on that activity, are concentrated. But there are other factors as well, notably institutionalizing factors which militate against proper recognition of the role played by 'marginal'--as well as 'marginalized'--activity (amateur theatre, regional theatre, etc.) in the definition of the theatrical Institution itself.

While the difference between a dramatic production and a literary text is obvious in theory, the distinction blurs when we attempt to enfold historical performances into theatre history. For we, lacking personal encounter with a long-past performance's signifiers or its audience reception, are left with no alternative other than to explore that event in terms of its still-extant literary text. This barrier remains to be overcome by those who would canonize any particular theatrical Performance.

A proliferation of sign-posts' dot the landscape of our contemporary discourse: 'postmodernism,' 'poststructuralism,' 'postcolonialism,' 'postindustrial'.... As we wearily anticipate yet another 'post' on the horizon, it becomes clear that what theatre researchers are experiencing is a significant epistemological shift which reflects a changing reality. Any change in the philosophy of knowledge will have a bearing on Theatre Historiography in Canada as elsewhere. This essay addresses this issue and outlines an 'other' theatre historiography which weaves the theories of Harold Innis and Marshall McLuhan into Michel Foucault's search for the 'rules of discourse' and Julia Kristeva's 'poetic-logic.' This exploration for historical discovery into English-Canadian theatrical discourse is mapped in relation to Alan Filewod's articulation of collective creation as a theatre-making process.

Tout en nous attendant, las, au prochain «post» qui surgira sur cet horizon, nous constatons que ce que connaissent actuellement les chercheurs/euses et théoriciens/ennes en domaine théâtral équivaut à un important déplacement du discours épistémologique, ce qui reflète à son tour une réalité toujours changeante. Tout déplacement du lieu de ce discours portera, cela est clair, sur l'Historiographie du théâtre canadien comme sur toute autre historiographie. Voilà le problème auquel s'adresse l'auteure ici, tout en délinéant une « autre » historiographie du théâtre qui cherche à tisser ensemble les théories de Harold Innis et Marshall McLuhan d'une part, pour les intégrer ensuite à la recherche entreprise par Michel Foucault en vue d'établir des « règles du discours » comme aussi à la « logique poétique » de Julia Kristeva, de l'autre. The methods of the 'new' history have helped to define the study of theatre history; at the same time, these methods tend to de-emphasize the influence of the politics of the nation state on that history. This can create tension in a discipline such as Canadian theatre history that defines itself by national as well as cultural criteria. This article illustrates the tension by comparing the definition of theatrical culture implicit in two examples of the Upper Canada (Wellington County) local press during the 1860s with that of an American trade journal for the same period. Reference is made to the Civil War, the Fenian raids, and Confederation.

Mais ces méthodes ont tendance à minimaliser l'influence de la politique sur la nation en question, ce qui est susceptible de créer des tensions au sein d'une discipline comme la nôtre qui se définit selon des critères nationaux aussi bien que culturels. Dans cet article l'auteur cherche à illustrer ces tensions en comparant la définition d'une culture théâtrale implicite dans les deux exemples qu'il a choisis dans la presse locale du Haut-Canada (comté de Wellington) des années 1860, avec la notion de culture théâtrale qui semble prévaloir dans une revue américaine consacrée aux arts du spectacle, vers la même époque. Examining Judith Thompson's most recent stage play, Lion in the Streets, this paper treats the play first as a unified realist text which refers to a 'knowable' reality and second, as a text which foregrounds its own construction and problematizes a perception of reality as essential and static. The first approach posits the play as a mimetic representation of a current social reality and reads the play to identify some contemporary social problems, particularly problems of oppression related to perceived social differences. The second approach reads the play as discursively produced text and examines the way the play supports an understanding of all apparent realities as fiction. The second approach problematizes the stability of perceived realities, encouraging us to view problems identified in the first reading as not intractable but subject to change. In combining these two approaches I hope to show that they may be seen as compatible, as well as politically expedient, when what appears to be an 'essential' reality is considered within an anti-essentialist framework as a necessary but provisional fiction.

Je me propose d'étudier ici la dernière pièce de Judith Thompson, Lion in the Streets (Lion dans les rues), d'abord comme un texte réaliste cohérent qui se réfère à une réalité 'vécue' et, deuxièmement, comme un texte qui met en scène sa propre construction et qui met en question la perception d'une réalité qui serait par essence immuable. La première approche considère la pièce en tant que représentation mimétique d'une réalité sociale contemporaine et cherche à identifier les causes d'un certain nombre de conflits sociaux, particulièrement des problèmes d'oppression, oppression souvent vécue, à tort ou à raison, comme la conséquence d'inégalités sociales. La seconde approche est une lecture de la pièce en tant que texte construit rhétoriquement, ce qui nous permet de comprendre comment il est possible d'envisager toute réalité sous l'angle de la fiction. Cette seconde stratigie de lecture remet donc en question la notion de pérennité de la réalité telle qu'elle est pervue, et nous encourage d'envisager les problemes soulevés par la premiere approche comme sujets à caution et la réalité comme susceptible d'être transformée. Par la conjugaison de ces deux lectures, je désire démontrer que, tant du point de vue de la dramaturgie que de l'efficacité politique, il est important que la réalité dite "essentielle" soit considérée dans un cadre "anti-essentielle", c'est-d-dire comme une fiction nécessaire mais dont le statut demeure provisoire.

Canadian theatre history has tended to look at the theatre as a hermetically isolated cultural artifact with little concrete reference to other aspects of Canadian national life. This essay examines the development of the theatre as an index of post-colonial nationhood with reference to parallel developments in the Canadian Navy.

This paper explores through personal experience and from a cultural materialist perspective the conditions which shape the reproduction of theatre and theatre history in contemporary Nova Scotia. It focuses on the Mulgrave Road Co-op Theatre, the ways in which its theatre is produced, recorded, 'archived,' represented in documentation (including reviews), and reconstructed in theatre history and criticism. It draws upon the author's own histories of and with the company as a way of posing problems and raising issues pertaining to the writing of contemporary theatre history in the Maritimes.

This article analyses the performer/spectator dynamic present in the text and performance of some Canadian one-woman plays, and considers the re-positioning of the female as subject and the possible construction of an ideal female spectator. The article looks at both English- and French-language monologues in an attempt to understand the effects of cultural difference on performer/spectator relationships, focusing on Jovette Marchessault's Les Vaches de nuit, Marie Savard's Bien A moi, Sharon Pollack's Getting it Straight, Pamela Boyd's Inside Out, Beverly Simon's Preparing, and Janet Feindel's A Particular Class of Women.

Inspired by two ground-breaking collections: The Empire Writes Back, by Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths and Helen Tiffin (London: Routledge 1989) and After Europe, eds. Stephen Slemon and Helen Tiffin (Sydney: Dangaroo Press 1989), it concludes with a modest manifesto of eight issues which together define one kind of postcolonial theoretical model for the (re)writing of English-Canadian theatre history.

Through this position paper the author seeks to provide a focus for extended discussion of some of the key issues arising from feminist approaches to theatre research. She indicates some of the insights made possible by feminist theoretical analyses of theatre historiography as well as some of the implications of the various positions inscribed in articles on Canadian feminist theatre historiography over the past ten years. The author hopes to facilitate more discussion of the wide variety of feminist challenges to and transformation of the theory and practice of theatre research and theatre historiography.

The multi-level problems associated with the transformation of dramatic texts from one cultural context to another are examined in this paper, with reference to adaptations of popular European plays made specifically for use by all-male amateur groups in Quebec at the end of the 19th century. Some suggestions are offered concerning the general kinds of information to be gleaned from close multi-text analysis, the specific cultural indicators gatheredfrom this particular study, and the possibility of developing a usable 'theory of adaptation.'

The initial phase of women's drama in Canada coincides with the first wave of 19th-century Canadian feminism and the Canadian women's reform movement. At the time, a variety of women wrote and staged plays that grew out of their commitment to the political, ideological and social context of the movement. The 'Mock Parliament,' a form of theatrical parody in which men's and women's roles are reversed, was collectively created by different groups of suffragists in Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. This article attempts to recuperate these works for a history of Canadian feminist theatre. It will argue that the 'dual' conservative and liberal ideology of the suffrage movement informs all aspects of the Mock Parliament. On the one hand, these plays critique the division of gender roles that material feminism wants to uphold; they are testimony to the strength of a woman's movement that knew how to work as equal players within traditionally structured political organizations. On the other hand, they betray the safe, moderate tactics of an upper and middle-class, white womanhood who wanted political representation but no structural social change. These opposing tensions are inherent in theatrical parody which is both imitative and critical.

Le théâtre écrit par les femmes au Canada coïncide, dans sa phase initiale, avec la première vague de féminisme au 19e siècle, et avec la naissance du Mouvement féminin de réforme politique. A cette époque, diverses femmes écrivirent et créèrent des pièces nées de leur engagement idéologique et social. L'une des formes théâtrales que choisit ce premier mouvement fut celle, parodique, du «Faux-Parlement», où furent renversés les rôles masculin et féminin traditionnels. Ces pièces furent l'oeuvre collective de différents groupes de suffragistes au Manitoba, en Ontario, en Alberta, en Colombie Britannique. Dans cet article l'auteure cherche à récupérer ces pièces, en vue d'une histoire du théâtre féministe au Canada. Elle y insiste surtout sur la dualité de Vidéoloqie, tant conservatrice que libérale, qui s'infiltre à travers tous aspects du Faux-Parlement. D'une part, ces pièces s'attaquent à la répartition des rôles masculin et féminin traditionnels que veulent maintenir les féministes « matérialistes »-en quoi ces pièces témoignent de la puissance d'un mouvement defemmes qui savaient travailler d'égalité au sein d'organismes poliques à structure traditionnelle. D'autre part, ce théâtre déploie les tactiques inoffensives et modérées typiques de la haute et moyenne bourgeoisie, tactiques d'une féminité « blanche » qui cherche sa représentation politique sans apporter de sérieux changements aux structures sociales de base. De telles tensions s'avèrent fondamentales à cette forme de parodie dramatisée qui se veut en même temps imitative et critique.
