The notion of semiosphere is certainly one of Lotman’s most discussed ideas. In this essay, we propose to investigate its ecological and biological dimensions, tracing them back to Vernadsky’s concept of biosphere and to Lotman’s environmental vision of art articulated in his early work, The Structure of the Artistic Text. Our investigation reveals how the biosemiotic undercurrents in Lotmanian thought enable the emergence of a cyclical, homeostatic model of culture that counterbalances a Modernist vision of art as a force working for unquestioned linear progress.

Ivan Bunin occupies a unique place in the context of Russian literature. The following article demonstrates the relevance of Juri Lotman’s work on defining semiotic artistic space by examining Bunin’s modeling of the world and his construction of artistic space in his prose works. Special attention is paid to the semiosphere, its central mechanisms, and their realization in several of Bunin’s works, and especially the short story entitled “Horror Story”.

Le présent article illustre la pertinence du travail de Juri Lotman sur la définition d’espace sémiotique artistique pour comprendre la modélisation du monde chez Bunin et la construction de l’espace artistique dans sa prose. The present article is a modest introduction to a larger theme that analyzes the use of music as text in the plays, short stories and novels of Mixail Bulgakov. The important contribution of Juri Lotman’s theoretical work on artistic space, the semiosphere, and the role of incorporating “texts within texts” (текст в тексте) is fundamental to our explication of the process of understanding Bulgakov’s use of music as text in a variety of its manifestations, resulting in an integrated and full-bodied textual structure that generates meanings critical to the works in which it is embedded. This analysis will focus on defining what “music as text” is for Bulgakov and specifically consider the use of music in the play, Zoya’s Apartment (Зойкина квартира).

Cet article est une modeste introduction à une problématique de recherche plus vaste qui porte sur la “mise en texte” de la musique dans l’oeuvre littéraire et théâtrale de Mikhaïl Boulgakov. Ce projet s’inspire des travaux de Juri Lotman, dont les contributions sur l’espace artistique, la sémiosphère, et sur les rapports d’intégration textuelles (intégration d’un texte au sein d’un autre texte), nous aident à bien cerner les différentes manifestations d’une “textualisation” de la musique chez Boulagakov. L’étude de ce phénomène permet de mettre au jour une structure textuelle complexe alors que l’intégration de la musique ajoute une strate sémantique au texte qui l’accueille. Pour les fins du présent article nous portons notre attention sur la pièce L’appartement de Zoya.

Most accounts of Juri Lotman’s legacy note his interest in information theory and cybernetics which is closely tied to his desire to use exact methods in the humanities. However, this connection itself has hardly been studied. This article focuses on a pair of terms with cybernetic origins found throughout Lotman’s works : “mechanism” and “ustrojstvo”. I try to show that these terms and the way they are used are not accidental but belong to an important strand in Lotman’s thought. An overview is presented of Lotman’s direct contacts with cybernetics and cyberneticians, and how the terms “ustrojstvo” and “mechanism” found their way into his metalanguage. The main focus is on exploring how Lotman understands this pair of terms. Translation problems related to them are also discussed.

Tandis que les ouvrages consacrés à l’oeuvre de Juri Lotman mentionnent souvent son intérêt pour la théorie de l’information et la cybernétique, intérêt intimement lié à son désir d’appliquer aux sciences humaines des méthodes exactes, peu d’études se sont penchées sur le sujet. Consacré à deux termes qui originent de la cybernétique et parsèment l’oeuvre lotmanienne, “mécanisme” et “ustrojstvo”, cet article cherche à démontrer que ni leur présence ni leur usage ne sont accidentels chez Lotman et qu’ils s’inscrivent dans un axe important de sa pensée. L’auteure y présente un survol des contacts directs qu'entretient Lotman avec la cybernétique et les cybernéticiens, et de la manière dont les termes “mécanisme” et “ustrojstvo” ont fait leur chemin dans son métalangage. Elle explore ensuite la manière dont Lotman comprend cette paire de termes. Les problèmes de traduction qu’ils posent sont également abordés.

Simply stated, sincerity is an intention to express the truth, while insincerity is an intention to mislead. A sincere person can be wrong and give false information, while an insincere person can make a mistake and speak the truth. Sincerity – and not the truth – is what is detected with a polygraph (a mentally ill person responding to the question “Are you Napoleon?” with a negation may well register as lying on a polygraph test).

In this paper I bring different examples (from texts which belong to various spheres of discourse) that illustrate a splitting of consciouscess in an otherwise mentally sane person : fantastic accusations (both self-accusations and accusations of others) are presented in a state of both belief and disbelief. Usual triggers for this phenomenon are fear and anger (which often occur together), but reasons may also be found in erotic desire or else in aesthetic licence, etc.

Dit simplement, la sincérité suppose l’intention d’exprimer la vérité, alors que l’insincérité suppose l’intention d’induire en erreur. Une personne sincère peut néanmoins être dans l’erreur et transmettre malgré elle une information fausse; de même, une personne non sincère peut transmettre une vérité malgré son intention d’induire en erreur. En outre, c’est la sincérité et non la vérité que vise à déceler un polygraphe. À preuve, une personne atteinte d’une déficience intellectuelle et qui croit être Napoléon échouera le test du polygraphe si elle répond par la négative à la question “êtes-vous Napoléon?”.

Dans cet article, j’examine différents exemples textuels (tirés de divers genres : fiction littéraire, publicité, discours politique, plaidoirie, propagande) où l’on peut observer un tel clivage chez un énonciateur sain d’esprit : des auto- ou alio-accusations fantastiques sont présentées qui mettent en jeu des états mentaux de croyance et de non-croyance. Les principaux déclencheurs de ces clivages sont la peur et la colère – deux émotions qui se chevauchent souvent –, mais il existe également d’autres causes comme par exemple le désir érotique ou la licence esthétique.
