Abstract
Cyril Achard’s Le grand espace tonal is a very interesting and original book that lies at a crossroads between theory and practice, treatise and pedagogical handbook, and also between written concert music and audiotactile music—jazz, rock, pop, Brazilian popular music. It proposes a general interpretative model of tonality called “extended tonal area”, far removed from chord-scale theory and its simplifications that have marked jazz pedagogy since the seventies and contributed to the rise within this music of a formerly unknown scored music culture, fostered by the growing circulation of fake books and the explosion in the number of jazz teaching institutions. While the extended tonal area structure is not without its critics (as is any undertaking of this scope), it is nevertheless a valuable contribution to contemporary harmonic theory.
