This paper underlines the significance of farm dwellers to the wage labour force during the first half of the 19th century. It begins with a consideration of the influences which led farm dwellers in the northeast Maritimes to seek wage work. It then examines the types of work that they became involved with, emphasizing the variety in their work experiences, both in local and in distant settings. It concludes with a consideration of some of the consequences that followed from the involvement of farm dwellers in wage labour.

The essay explores relations of gender and class, and the strategies developed by male unionists in defence of masculine craft status in the International Typographical Union (ITU), the International Printing Pressmen's and Assistants' Union(IPP&AU), and the International Brotherhood of Bookbinders (IBB), between 1850 and 1914.

The ITU and IPP&AU organized along masculine craft lines and effectively defended their status within the workplace with industrial capitalist incursions and the mechanization of the production process. A crisis to male domination of typesetting occurred with the introduction of machine typesetting in newspaper production during the early 1890s. The ITU succeeded in securing control over the operations of the machines for its predominately male membership. By the mid-19th century the work of press feeder was defined as unskilled work suitable for women and boys. With the introduction of larger and faster presses during the last two decades of the 19th century, the IPP&AU struggled to appropriate the task for masculinity using the male breadwinner ideal. The IBB actively supported the organization of women bindery workers from its inception in 1892, albeit with the intent of protecting the interests of journeymen.

This article examines the creation and shaping of an occupation — public school teaching — in 19th century British Columbia. It represents teaching as a contractory endeavour organized around the reproduction of labour power. Drawing upon secondary accounts of teaching and state formation (supplemented with representative documents from the period of concern), the article emphasizes how struggles between different segments of the teaching force and state representatives emerged around changing moral and technical priorities. In the context of state formation and subsequent industrial development, teaching was transformed by the end of the 19th century from a relatively autonomous occupation to a highly regulated and segmented force of dependent state employees.

This paper examines how women fared in the Canadian unemployment insurance scheme from the end of the World War II until the early 1960s. The implementation of UI in this period reinforced women's marginal economic position, as they were channelled into low-wage sectors and their access to income security benefits limited. The latter resulted, in particular, from a special UI regulation for married women, in effect from 1950 to 1957. The eventual revocation of this regulation can be attributed to changes in women's labour force participation, in their political representation in women's organizations and trade unions, and in attitudes concerning the proper role for women.

Cet article concerne la sort réservé aux femmes par le programme canadien d'assurance-chômage, depuis la fin de la deuxième guerre mondiale au début des années 1960. L'application du programme au cours de cette période sert à renforcer la marginalité économique des femmes alors qu'elles sont dirigées vers des secteurs d'emplois sous-rémunérés et que la couverture de l'assurance limite leur accès aux bénéfices de sécurité du revenu. Cette dernière restriction résulte d'une disposition particulière pour les femmes mariées, en vigueur de 1950 à 1957. Le retrait éventuel de cette disposition peut être attribué à des changements dans leur participation au marché du travail, dans leur représentation politique au sein d'organisations fé minines et syndicales, et à de nouvelles attitudes concernant le rôle des femmes.

During most of the 1960s, the CSN was both an advocate of provincial autonomy and a defender of federalism. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, a majority of its militants came to favour separatism. In 1980, the CSN gave its critical approval to a yes vote in the referendum. Yet the labour union central did not officially endorse independence, mostly because its leadership feared internal divisions and disaffiliations. In addition, the CSN expressed its disappointment with the governmental record of the Parti québécois which had come to power in 1976.
