Le temps géographique perçu et vécu, peut être actif ou ressenti. Actif puisqu'il impose les rythmes de la vie rurale, agricole ou artisanale, par des saisons à caractères variables selon les types de climats. Ce temps, au rythme cosmique, est différent du temps vécu, conventionnel et « monnayable ». Il aiguille l'activité urbaine et industrielle, presque indifférente aux rythmes saisonniers. La semaine n'a plus que cinq jours, tandis que l'année active est amputée de périodes d'inactivités improductives.

Enfin, le temps maître de la vie : temps de formation, temps d'activité, temps de retraite.

Ainsi le temps géographique révèle ses différentes facettes, selon l'angle sous lequel nous le considérons.

Geographic time imposes its own rhythms on rural, agricultural and artisanal life by the varying climatic conditions of its seasons. Such « cosmic » time differs from conventional and commercial time, which rules urban and industrial activities and which depends almost not at all on seasonal variations. The work week is now only five days long, and the year is broken by many periods of unproductive inactivity. Finally, time, with its stages of training, activity and retirement, is the master of life.

Afin de fournir des états numériques récents, comparables et prélevés au même moment, un relevé détaillé a été entrepris au cours de l'été 1967 dans les quatre comtés de l’Abitibi de l'Ouest, l'Abitibi de l'Est, Rouyn-Noranda et Témiscamingue. L'ensemble du territoire, qui est situé dans le Pré-Nord, forme le Nord-Ouest du Québec méridional. La banque de lots qui ont été attribués atteint près de 20,000 unités ; sur ce nombre, 6,500 supportent une résidence et 2,000 sont convenablement cultivés. Un quart des fermes ont été abandonnées au cours des dernières années. Les valeurs varient grandement d'une paroisse à l'autre. Régionalement, le Témiscamingue constitue la meilleure région et Rouyn-Noranda la moins agricole. Au front pionnier, 5% seulement des unités d'exploitation sont des fermes gagne-pain. L'écoumène de colonisation n'est pas un écoumène-bloc. Dans une optique polyvalente, le réaménagement complet de l'espace abitibien constitue une tâche urgente.

During the summer of 1967, the writer undertook a detailed survey of colonization lots in the « Pré-Nord » counties of Abitibi-East, Abitibi-West, Rouyn-Noranda and Temiskaming, located in the northwest sector of southern Québec. Only 6,500 of the 20,000 lots granted to colonists in this region are now occupied, giving rise to a piecemeal, discontinuous agricultural ecumene. No more than 2,000 of these lots are being properly farmed at the moment. Over the last few years alone about 5,000 lots have been abandoned. Temiskaming is perhaps the most suitable district for farming, and Rouyn-Noranda the least, but conditions vary greatly from parish to parish within all of these counties. Only 5 per cent of the farms located along the pioneer fringe of the region can be considered as viable units. A complete re-planning of the Abitibi region would now seem a priority.

La maison rurale canadienne a subi une lente évolution, faite d'échecs et de trouvailles. Les premiers colons, habitués à un climat tempéré, aux hivers relativement doux, n'étaient pas préparés à lutter contre le froid canadien. Les pierres dont étaient faites les maisons étaient de mauvais isolants et subissaient l'action désastreuse du gel et du dégel. Les foyers, les âtres, chauffaient l'air du temps. Cette mésadaptation a fait de nombreux ravages dans la population et chez les animaux. Après maints et parfois vains tâtonnements, lambrissage des murs extérieurs, planchers isolés du sol, avènement du poêle central, constructions en bois recouvertes de bardeaux de cèdre, diversification des bâtiments, la maison rurale canadienne a pris peu à peu un caractère propre qui la distingue de toute autre maison rurale européenne. Cependant, malgré certains traits bien personnels, elle rejoint un type d'habitation installé dans toute l’Amérique du Nord, avec ses balcons, ses galeries extérieures et ses multiples bâtiments.

The rural French-Canadian farmhouse has undergone a painfully slow and broken evolution. The first colonists, accustomed to a temperate climate with relatively mild winters, were poorly prepared for their struggle against the below-zero temperatures of the new world. The stone walls of the first houses were poor insulators, and were easily broken up by frost. Fireplaces and hearths were inefficient to the point of being useless. This poor adjustment to the canadian reality helped to result in a decimation of the human and animal population. After many only partly successful attempts at improvement (the wainscoting of exterior walls, the insulating of floors, primitive forms of central heating, the construction of wooden buildings with cedar shingling, and diversification of farm buildings), the rural French-Canadian farmhouse slowly became more and more distinctive, and now is quite different from other rural European houses. Nevertheless, despite certain virtually unique features, it still resembles a type of building found almost every-where in rural North America, with its balconies, verandahs, and numerous out-buildings.

Acadia from its initial settlement in 1604 until 1713 was a part of the French colonial empire in North America. By the Treaty of Utrecht most of Acadia and its French population was ceded to the British. The political instability generated by the anomalous position of the Acadians eventually led to their expulsion in 1755. During the following 50 years their efforts at repatriation were thwarted and only toward the end of the period were they finally settled in places offering a measure of security. The trends of their migrations over the period are illustrated, as well as their final settlement pattern in 1800.

L'Acadie, depuis le début du XVII^e siècle jusqu'en 1713, faisait partie de l'empire colonial français en Amérique du Nord. Le traité d'Utrecht céda la plus grande partie de l'Acadie et sa population à la Grande-Bretagne. L'instabilité politique qu'engendra la position des Acadiens par rapport aux nouvelles limites coloniales aboutit finalement à leur expulsion et à leur déportation en 1755. Durant les cinquante années qui suivirent, se développa un vaste et difficile mouvement de retour. Mais ce n'est que vers la fin de cette période que les Acadiens se fixèrent définitivement en des endroits offrant un minimum de stabilité. Ces mouvements migratoires durant cette période font l'objet du présent article, de même que la répartition des communautés acadiennes vers 1800.

L'auteur, qui s'intéresse à la fois à la géographie de l'Amérique latine et à la géographie des communications, a noté que certains aspects de la géographie économique ont été jusqu'ici négligés, notamment ceux qui touchent les mouvements de capitaux. Le présent article analyse les problèmes soulevés par une étude géographique de ces mouvements de capitaux, en se référant au cas de l'aide étrangère, bilatérale et multilatérale, fournie aux pays de l'Amérique latine. L'auteur y étudie : a) le problème de la disponibilité et de la valeur des sources ; b) la recherche d'une méthode apte a combler les déficiences du matériel documentaire ; c) la nature fragmentaire des résultats obtenus par une telle méthode. Cet article ne se veut qu'introductif à un sujet auquel l'auteur consacre présentement ses recherches.

This paper stems from the author's double interest in the geography of Latin America on the one hand, and in the study of transport, communications, trade, and other flows which characterize the geography of spatial interchange on the other. Noting that some aspects of economic geography have been more neglected than others, the author attempts to analyze the problems arising from a geographic study of capital flows, by focusing on the case of foreign aid to Latin America. Accordingly, the paper considers in turn: a) the problem of availability and quality of sources, b) the method to be used in view of existing gaps in the source material, and c) the fragmentary nature of the results obtained by such a method. The paper is admittedly short and should be considered only as the first stage of the author's planned research in this field.
