Abstract
Since the early 90s’, Japan is going through a time of major economical difficulties. One of the consequences of the crisis is the weakening of the ties between big companies and universities that translated into an increase of temp workforce. Paradoxically, even if many worry about the increasing unemployment and insecurity, there is also narratives in the public space that are accusing the new generation for being irresponsible, selfish and to lack ambition. Through the creation of a category, the freeters, we will examine how the meaning of work comes into play.
