Shakespeare, de la scène élisabéthaine au cinéma Une perspective historique et esthétique

Résumé

Cet article analyse révolution subie par la présentation théâtrale des pièces shakespeariennes depuis la Renaissance jusqu’à la période victorienne. Il décrit les changements esthétiques majeurs et montre comment ces derniers se sont prolongés dans les adaptations cinématographiques du XX^e siècle. Les théâtres ont progressivement introduit des éléments picturaux réalistes, instauré une séparation entre les spectateurs et les acteurs et utilisé des procédés de focalisation qui s’apparentent déjà aux techniques narratives cinématographiques.

Abstract

This article analyses how the theatrical presentation of Shakespeare's plays evolved from the Renaissance to the Victorian era. It points out all the major aesthetic changes, and shows how they extended into the screen adaptations of our time. Theatres progressively introduced realistic pictorial elements, established a separation between the actors and the audience, and used focusing processes which already had certain similarities to film narrative techniques.
