L’interprétation en Colombie-Britannique à l’époque des explorations par voie terrestre et de la traite des fourrures dans les comptoirs (1793-1846) Interpreting in British Columbia at the Time of the Explorations by Land and of the Fur Trade in the Company Posts (1793-1846)

Résumé

Les journaux tenus par Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser et David Thompson montrent que ce sont surtout des Autochtones qui ont servi d’interprètes pendant leurs voyages de découverte et que ceux-ci ont ainsi grandement contribué à en assurer le succès. Dans les comptoirs établis à la suite de ces explorations, les interprètes étaient essentiels. Le présent article traite de leur statut au sein des compagnies de traite, des dangers que comportait leur métier, de l’influence que certains avaient sur les populations locales et du rôle des femmes comme interprètes et comme enseignantes des langues amérindiennes. On y trouve également une esquisse de la personnalité et de la carrière de quelques interprètes.

Abstract

The Journals of the B.C. explorers Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser and David Thompson show that Amerindians very often served as interpreters and that, as such, they contributed in no small measure to the success of the expeditions. In the trading posts subsequently built by the fur companies, interpreters were essential. Their rank in the hierarchy of the companies, the dangers related to their job, the influence some of them had on local populations, and the part played by women as interpreters and teachers of languages are examined. The main characteristics of the personality and career of a few interpreters are also given.
