Abstract
The Poetry Beyond Text project combined literary criticism, experimental psychology and practice-based research to study hybrid poetic-visual forms and practices, including artist books, engravings, poetic sculptures and digital works. Three works will be analysed here: Vivam, a wooden poetry-sculpture created by poet Deryn Rees-Jones and sculptor Marion Smith; The Wren's Egg, a poem-photograph created by Rees-Jones in collaboration with artist Alice Maher; and Poempondscroll, a poetic-photographic scroll on Chinese paper created by artist Helen Douglas and poet Valerie Gillies. Using the theories developed by Martin Seel and W.J.T. Mitchell, we will see how these collaborative works express, mediate or reconfigure the aesthetic potentials, tensions and problems surrounding the presence of poetic text in visual artworks, in order to explore the potential of the book as an object.

Résumé
Le projet Poetry Beyond Text s’est intéressé à des œuvres poético-visuelles hybrides (y compris des livres d'artistes, des gravures, des sculptures poétiques et des œuvres numériques) en s’appuyant sur des méthodes de recherche théoriques, psychologiques et pratiques. Trois œuvres seront analysées ici : Vivam, une poésie-sculpture en bois créée par le poète Deryn Rees-Jones et le sculpteur Marion Smith; The Wren's Egg, un poème-photographie issue d’une collaboration entre Rees-Jones et l'artiste Alice Maher; et Poempondscroll, un rouleau poétique-photographique sur papier chinois créé par l'artiste Helen Douglas et la poète Valerie Gillies. En nous appuyant sur les formulations théoriques de Martin Seel et W.J.T. Mitchell, nous verrons comment ces œuvres collaboratives expriment, médiatisent ou reconfigurent les potentiels esthétiques, les tensions et les problèmes entourant la présence du texte poétique dans l'œuvre d'art visuelle, et cela afin d’explorer le potentiel du livre en tant qu'objet.
