Le totalitarisme ou le règne de l’inhumain

Résumé

Le totalitarisme nous interroge, parce qu’il met en question la croyance au progrès qui a animé toute la modernité. Mais l’a-t-on pensé avec justesse quand on l’a compris comme la résurgence, bientôt dépassée, de la barbarie dans le processus de civilisation ? Ne doit-on pas au contraire y voir « le règne de l’inhumain », qui remet en cause de manière radicale nos catégories morales et politiques, parce qu’il rend concevable que l’histoire puisse ne pas être orientée vers le triomphe du droit, de la démocratie et de la liberté et que l’inégalité, l’abandon du droit et la servitude volontaire soient des possibilités inscrites dans notre modernité ?

Abstract

Totalitarianism questions us because it challenges the belief in progress that has driven modernity. Do we conceive of it with relevance when we understand it as the soon outdated resurgence of barbarism in the process of civilization ? Instead, shouldn’t we rather understand it as “the reign of inhumanity” which radically questions our moral and political categories as the fact that history may not head for the triumph of law, democracy and liberty and that inequality, the giving up of law and voluntary servitude may be part of our modern world would then become conceivable ?
