Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine parents’ perception on whether Mango Mania, a school-based health initiative, has an influence on eating habits and physical activity levels of their children. A questionnaire was administered to parents of children who participated in the Mango Mania initiative at their school in Miramichi, New Brunswick. Results show that Mango Mania has a positive influence on physical activity practices of children as well as their eating habits. Mango Mania also heightened parents’ awareness of the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity. Parents indicated encouraging these positive behaviors in their children. Parents also observed several other positive changes in their children, such as higher energy level and better concentration. This study provides the basis for groups who aspire to establish a school-based initiative in their communities in order to reduce the risk of obesity in children.
