Les lettres de Louise Couture (1837-1916) conservées dans le Fonds Famille Landry 1826-1975 aux Archives nationales à Montréal racontent l’histoire d’une jeune Canadienne française qui décide d’épouser un marchand participant à la ruée vers l’or en Californie pour obtenir de l’argent à l’intention de sa famille. Une lecture attentive de la correspondance de cette femme avec les siens et des siens entre eux permet de découvrir une pratique « genrée » du transfert de fonds dans laquelle Louise, qui cherche à renflouer les finances défaillantes de sa famille restée au Québec, navigue entre les restrictions imposées par le mariage et celles de la classe sociale. Faisant appel au cadre théorique de l’« espace-ressources » et de l’« espace investi » de Rosental, l’analyse ajoute une perspective microhistorique et une dimension « genrée » aux récentes recherches démographiques sur les Canadiens français dans l’Ouest à la fin du 19e siècle.

Abstract
The letters of Louise Couture (1837-1916) preserved in the Fonds Famille Landry 1826-1975 at the Archives nationales in Montréal tell the story of a young French Canadian woman who marries a merchant supplying the California gold rush as a means of acquiring funds for her family. This paper uses a close reading of family correspondence networks to discover a gendered practice of remittance in which Louise navigated the restrictions of marriage and class while attempting to supplement the failing finances of her family back in Quebec. Borrowing Rosental’s frame of “espace-ressources” and “espace investi”, our analysis adds a micro-historical perspective and gendered preface to recent demographic research on French Canadians in the West in the late 19th century.
