Abstract
Over the last few decades, the life expectancy of people with intellectual disability has significantly increased. To foster the social participation of this emerging population, it is critical to obtain a better understanding of their needs and aspirations on this matter. This literature review aims to describe ageing people with intellectual disabilities’ (APID) views on social participation. The analysis of the 19 articles included indicates that while the experience of growing older brings many promises for some APID, it can also be marked by disruption, conflict, and uprooting for others. APID desire to feel useful, to participate actively in decisions concerning their lives, and to receive appropriate support allowing them to develop meaningful relationships with other community members.
