Abstract
Over the course of their lifetime, a certain number of autistic children will manifest symptoms of a sensory nature. In order to understand the ontogeny of these symptoms, this article presents a review of the recent literature pertaining to neurosensory manifestations in autistic children. The author then provides an overview of the different sensory manifestations which were observed among 5 autistic children, based upon the data from a checklist which was completed by their parents, an educator, and the researcher. These data enabled the researcher to identify some manifestations that were common to the 5 children, and some that were unique to each child. The results from this study indicate that all 5 autistic children who participated in the research showed sensory manifestations. Documenting the presence of sensory manifestations therefore appears to be an essential requirement when diagnosing a child with autism. The author concludes by addressing the possible consequences of the findings of this study for autistic children.
