The design of this essay is to examine the prospects and perils of this epistolary venture set against the cultural, political, and religious circumstances of the time, and thus to show that this humanist project floundered not so much because of differences in personal character as due to fissures concealed in the rhetorical landscape over which these correspondents wished to travel. This rich and intricate theatre of humanist letters thereby illustrates both the noble aspirations and the inherent fragility of humanist discourse.

This article takes John Milton’s description of the “knotty Africanisms” of the Church Fathers as the launching point for an investigation of African Latin in early modern thought. The first part traces the development of a conception of Africitas or Africanismus as a peculiarly African form of Latin in Western scholarship from Erasmus to the early eighteenth century. The second part considers early modern African Latinists such as the Granada professor Juan Latino and the Jamaican poet Francis Williams and their reception in this light. The concept of Africitas is shown to have taken hold at the same time as the globalization of Latin.

This article is a close reading of Leonardo Bruni’s panegyric for the city of Florence (1404). It expands the discussion of the Laudatio Florentinae Urbis beyond the political context in which it has mostly, through the influence of Hans Baron’s pioneering work, been considered. It reads the text as a powerful assertion of Renaissance Humanism in its most secular, world-affirming mode. In exploring the value structure of the text, it finds the distinctly Aristotelian virtues ofmegaloprépeia (magnificence) and megalopsychia (great-souledness) structuring the text along with the Ciceronian and Aristidean virtue of humanitas. The article sees the appreciation of beauty as permeating the text, from its treatment of architecture, landscape, and city life to its treatment of the Florentine political institutions.

This article focuses on the Socinian ethical treatise Ethica Aristotelica, written by Johann Crell in c. 1622 in Raków, Poland. It is commonly believed that this work, which systematized the theory contained in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, was a simple compendium intended for exclusive use at the Racovian Academy, an educational institution that welcomed students of diverse religious backgrounds. However, a careful reading of the treatise shows that behind a veil of Aristotelian thought, controversial elements of the Socinian faith were smuggled into the text. These were primarily the idea of Pelagianism and the belief in the human nature of Christ. In the present article, a careful analysis accompanied by several lines of evidence support the idea thatEthica Aristotelica also represents an instrument for promoting the Socinian faith, initially among the students of the Academy, and then, with the print of the first edition in the Netherlands in 1650, among other European confessions.

Two models of compassion coexisted in early modern English thinking: one characterized fellow-feeling as a form of contagion that physically compelled the sharing of passions through the humoral body; the other saw compassion as a moral exercise that required deliberate encouragement and active practice. This paper argues that Shakespeare’s The Rape of Lucrece demonstrates the dynamic interaction of these two models, situating Lucrece’s post-rape failures of productive compassionate interaction as the consequence of the changes produced in her body by the force of Tarquin’s passion, imparted to her through the event of the rape. By tracing Shakespeare’s poetic anatomy of the compassionate body through the rhetoric of opposition in the poem, this analysis elucidates how the construction of gender in humoral theory shapes the narration of the rape and exhibits the enduring influence of the humoral body on the period’s understanding of social life.
