La nation, sujet politique indéterminé

Résumé

Poser la question du lien entre la nation et la subjectivité politique, c’est d’abord s’interroger sur la composante symbolique de l’imaginaire qui investit le projet national. Cette composante repose sur la place qu’occupe la citoyenneté dans la représentation du lien national en tant que support de la nation politique moderne. C’est aussi prendre en considération le relais indispensable que constitue l’État par rapport à la formation du peuple en sujet-citoyen. C’est s’interroger sur la représentation du lien avec les autres nations par celui qui s’établit avec les autres États : c’est l’intériorisation de la relation communautaire ou régionale dans la nation politique. La signification politique du projet d’autodétermination appartient ainsi à la réflexion sur la démocratie dans la mesure où les représentations de la subjectivité en sont le principe fondateur. C’est dans cet esprit que le Québec représente un cas d’espèce. La volonté d’autodétermination qui inspire le projet souverainiste du Québec n’appartient au droit international que comme conséquence d’un trajet politique tout à fait spécifique.

Abstract

To question the link between the Nation State and political subjectivity, is to examine simultaneously the symbolic components of that imaginaire which is invested in the national project. Such components rest upon that locus occupied by citizenship in the representation of the national bond, as the foundation of a politically modern nation. It is also relevant to take into consideration the mediatory role played by the state in its formation of people as citizen-subjects. One needs to examine the representation of its links to other nations: there lies the subjectivity of the communinitarian, or regional link within the nation as political subject. The political meaning of self-determination as a project thus pertains to the question of democracy inasmuch as the representations of subjectivity constitute the foundation of democracy. It is in this context that Québec represents a very individual and specific case. The resolute self-determination which vitalizes the Québec sovereignty project only pertains to international law as the consequence of a specific political process.
