Résumé
L’internationalisation de la R&D est une tendance lourde, mais très peu de travaux étudient la genèse de centres de R&D à l’international. L’article s’appuie sur l’analyse longitudinale de deux cas dans l’industrie automobile et montre que l’internationalisation de la R&D combine trois mécanismes constitutifs d’une « proximité organisée » : la construction de compétences et capacités, l’établissement de nouvelles routines et la constitution d’une légitimité interne et externe. Ces mécanismes s’inscrivent dans une temporalité longue, et sont à la base de l’enrichissement et de l’évolution des missions des centres de R&D à l’international.

Abstract
Wheareas the R&D activities get more and more global, we still have little insights or research results about how international R&D units’ genesis – meaning how they emerge and grow. Relying on a longitudinal analysis of two cases in the automotive industry, this article provides such insights. We show that the internationalization of R&D combines three constitutive mechanisms of an “organized proximity” (1), competence building (2) new routines building and (3) internal and external legitimacy building. These mechanisms drive the empowerment of the unit on a multi-year timeframe. They also allow to enriching and reorient the missions of these R&D offshore units.

Resumen
La internacionalización de la I + D es una tendencia importante pero muy poco investigaciones estudian la génesis de los centros de I + D en el extranjero. El artículo se basa en un análisis longitudinal de dos casos en la industria del automóvil y muestra que la internacionalización de la I + D combina tres mecanismos constitutivos de una « proximidad organizada » : la creación de competencias y capacidades, el establecimiento de nuevas rutinas y la instauración de una legitimidad interna y externa. Estos mecanismos son parte de una larga temporalidad, y son la base para el enriquecimiento y la evolución de las misiones de los centros de I + D en el extranjero.

Cédric Dalmasso est Professeur Assistant à Mines ParisTech PSL Research University, et chercheur au i3-Centre de Gestion Scientifique UMR CNRS 9217. Ancien élève de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, agrégé d’Economie-Gestion, Docteur de Mines ParisTech, ses recherches portent sur l’organisation, l’évolution du travail et la gestion des ressources humaines des activités intenses en connaissances.
Rémi Maniak est Maître de Conférences en sciences de gestion à Télécom ParisTech et à l'Ecole Polytechnique. Diplômé de l'Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris, il est Docteur en sciences de gestion de l'Ecole Polytechnique. Il a publié plusieurs articles dans des revues académiques internationales de premier plan, telles que Journal of Product Innovation Management, Industrial and Corporate Change, ou International Journal of Project Management.

Cédric Dalmasso is Assistant Professor at Mines ParisTech PSL Research University, and researcher at i3-Centre of Management Science UMR CNRS 9217. He received his Ph.D. in Management Science from Mines ParisTech and is a graduate of the ENS Cachan. His research tackles with organization, the evolution of work and human resources management in knowledge intensive activities.
Rémi Maniak is an associate professor at the Telecom ParisTech and assistant professor at the École Polytechnique Engineering Schools in Paris. He received his Ph.D. in Management Science from the École Polytechnique and is a graduate of the École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris (ESCP Europe). He published is research results in journals such as Journal of Product Innovation Management, Industrial and Corporate Change, or International Journal of Project Management.
