Résumé

Cet article décrit brièvement quelques problèmes liés à une forme particulière de traduction technique : la traduction de l'annuaire téléphonique de Bell Canada pour les Inuit du Nord (Inuit Nunangannicttunut). La principale source d'erreurs provient du fait que, même si les caractères syllabiques peuvent rendre la prononciation exacte des noms inuit, l'orthographe utilisée pour écrire ces noms sur les listes de base français I anglais est la plupart du temps mal adaptée et n'a pas grand-chose à voir avec la prononciation correcte des noms.

Abstract

This article will briefly describe some problems related to a quite particular form of technical translation: that of the Bell Canada telephone directory for the Inuit North: Inuit Nunanganniittunut. The main source of errors lies in the fact that even if the syllabic characters are able to render exactly the Inuit names as they are pronounced in Inuktitut, the orthography in which these names are written in the basic French I English listings to be translated is most often deficient and does not have much to do with the correct pronunciation of the names.
