Cet article entend démontrer les liens qui cimentaient la communauté maritime française en considérant les relations déployées à l’échelle des individus entre les littoraux de la France et de la Nouvelle-France. Nous posons l’hypothèse que l’univers atlantique, plus qu’un espace de mouvements, a été constitué d’un faisceau de relations interpersonnelles développées entre les points de départ des travailleurs de la mer, ceux qu’on appelle les pêcheurs, et leurs lieux d’implantation en Amérique. L’ensemble de ces rapports constitue une facette immatérielle mais bien réelle de la réalité halieutique, celle de l’interdépendance et des solidarités maintenues malgré les distances.

This paper illustrates the ties that were binding the French marine community by examining the ongoing relations between the residents of the costal regions of France and New France. The article is based on the hypothesis that the Atlantic Ocean was more than a passage, that it was in fact a nexus of interpersonal relations developed between the starting points of the sea workers –the fishermen– and their new homes in America. These relations constitute a facet which, although immaterial, is a concrete manifestation of a fishery reality, that of interdependence and solidarity maintained regardless of distances.

« Désormais… ». Il n’y aurait pas de mots plus célèbres dans l’histoire du Québec. Le premier ministre Paul Sauvé l’aurait prononcé sans cesse à l’automne 1959, alors qu’il succède à Maurice Duplessis, afin de tirer un trait définitif entre deux mondes : la Grande Noirceur duplessiste et la Révolution tranquille. Que Paul Sauvé ait prononcé le « Désormais… », on ne saurait en douter. Les contemporains en attestent, maints historiens le confirment. Osons malgré tout une question : Et si Paul Sauvé n’avait jamais prononcé le « Désormais… » ? C’est ce qui apparaît au terme de recherches exhaustives menées dans les journaux et documents de l’époque. Cet article propose d’étudier comment le « Désormais… » est devenu un mythistoire.

“Désormais…” (From Now On). There might not be a more famous word in Québec history. As he was succeeding Maurice Duplessis as Premier during the autumn of 1959, Paul Sauvé is said to have used this word repeatedly to draw a line between two worlds : the Great Darkness of the Duplessis era and the Quiet Revolution. There can be no doubt that Paul Sauvé routinely used the word “Désormais…”, as several contemporaries and historians have confirmed. Nonetheless, we ask the question : What if Paul Sauvé had never uttered “Désormais...” ? Through an exhaustive research in the archives and newspapers of that era, this paper examines how the word “Désormais...” became a mythistory.

Dans cet article, nous étudions l’histoire de Gentilly-1, premier réacteur nucléaire à avoir été mis en opération au Québec, un projet technologique conjoint entre Hydro-Québec et Énergie Atomique du Canada Limitée. Nous nous intéressons particulièrement aux processus qui ont influé sur la trajectoire de ce grand projet technologique, de la décision, prise en 1965, de construire un réacteur nucléaire à eau légère bouillante, jusqu’à sa fermeture définitive en 1981. Nous montrons l’importance des facteurs politiques et économiques dans les diverses finalités assignées au réacteur avant son arrêt définitif. La décision d’interrompre le fonctionnement du réacteur nucléaire ne peut en effet s’expliquer uniquement par des facteurs techniques. Suivre l’évolution graduelle du projet technologique de Gentilly-1 met en évidence le caractère contingent de nombreuses décisions prises au fil du temps et l’entrecroisement de facteurs de nature technique, économique et politique.

This paper examines the history of Gentilly-1, the first nuclear reactor operated in Québec as a joint technological venture between Hydro-Québec and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. We are particularly interested in the factors that have influenced the course of this major technological project from the decision in 1965 to build a boiling light water nuclear reactor until its final closure in 1981. We show the importance of political and economic factors in the various objectives assigned to the reactor before its final closure. The decision to interrupt the operation of the nuclear reactor cannot be explained by purely technical factors. By following the gradual evolution of the Gentilly-1 technological project, we highlight the contingent nature of many decisions taken over time and the intersection of technical, economic and political factors.
