Abstract
In L’Institution du littéraire, Lucie Robert highlights Jeanne Lapointe’s contribution to the emergence of a modern literary critique in Quebec. Robert notes that Lapointe not only “set out the conditions for university teaching of literature and the criteria for an original research practice”, but that she “helped to train generations of students who, from the late 1960s, would provide institutional foundations for literary research”. By studying Jeanne Lapointe’s correspondence with writers such as Marie-Claire Blais, Louky Bersianik, Madeleine Gagnon and Gabrielle Roy, this article aims to highlight another aspect of Lapointe’s contribution to the infiltration of modern ideas into Quebec literature, and more particularly into women’s literature. For Lapointe, correspondence, by the relational dimension it implies, seems to constitute a way of extending teaching, that is, the transmission of knowledge and intellectual exchange. Thus, the analysis of the letters will make it possible to grasp Lapointe’s role as a mentore – rarely examined from a female perspective – and to measure the extent of her influence on the course and works of some women writers.
