Abstract
In 1964, the colloquium organized by the journal Recherches sociographiques, under the theme “Littérature et société canadiennes-françaises”, brought together specialists responsible for assessing the state of French-Canadian literature, but also for initiating “a methodological debate that could lead to a fruitful dialogue between the aims of aesthetics and those of sociology”. Two women were invited : Jeanne Lapointe from Laval University and Eva Kushner from McGill University. Neither of them were specialists in French-Canadian literature, nor did they practice an approach to criticism based on sociology, an approach to which they were then, in fact, rather hostile. This article questions the presence of these two women invited to comment on the proposals made by Clément Lockquell and Fernand Dumont, in a seemingly incongruous order (Kushner responding to Lockquell, Lapointe to Dumont). There is no doubt that the organizers acted there knowingly : more than anyone else, in fact, these two still young women, with distinct academic trajectories, present methodological approaches that, although conflicting in many respects, offended tradition and reflected the future directions of literary criticism in French Canada.
