Mûlatre de Cayenne, membre de la famille constituée par le Père Enfantin après la mort de Saint-Simon, converti à l'islam pendant la mission des saint-simoniens en Égypte, l'interprète militaire Ismaÿl Urbain (1812-1884), commença une carrière d'interprète militaire en Algérie en 1837. Affecté à la Direction de l'Algérie au Ministère de la Guerre à Paris, puis membre du Conseil de gouvernement à Alger, il fut le conseiller politique du duc d'Aumale, puis l'inspirateur de la politique dite du " Royaume arabe " de Napoléon III. Par ses rapports, ses articles dans la presse, deux publications et une abondante correspondance, il exerça un magistère intellectuel et politique dans l'armée, l'administration et la presse, pour la défense des " Indigènes " contre les exigences des " colonistes " qui voulaient leur prendre leurs terres, leur refuser l'accès aux droits de la citoyenneté. Il est un aspect de cette personnalité complexe qui n'a pas encore été mis en lumière : c'est ce qu'il a appelé son " mariage arabe ". Ce mariage, qui tient une place importante dans ses deux autobiographies encore inédites et dans ses correspondances, a été vécu par Urbain comme le contrepoint de son engagement politique en faveur des Arabes. Célébrée devant le Cadi à Constantine en 1841, non reconnue par la loi française, cette union n'était pour le jeune interprète qu'un engagement provisoire. Elle aurait pû n'être qu'un " amour colonial ", si la personnalité de sa très jeune femme ne l'avait transformée en une union durable. L'écartèlement entre deux sociétés antagonistes, le regard des autres, de longues séparations, puis les souffrances et la maladie qui en 1864 emporta Djeyhmouna à l'âge de trente-cinq ans, l'enrichirent et la renforcèrent. C'est l'histoire de cette union qui est évoquée ici, à partir des informations qu'Urbain a données à ses amis sur une démarche qu'il voulait, et qui le fut presque, exemplaire.
Abstract
Mulatto from Cayenne, member of the family constituted by Père Enfantin after the death of Saint-Simon, convert to Islam during the Saint Simonians' mission to Egypt, the military interpreter Ismaÿl Urbain (1812-1884) began a career as an army interpreter in Algeria in 1837. Posted to the Algerian division of the War Ministry in Paris and subsequently a member of the governing Council in Algiers, he was the political advisor of the Duke of Aumale and later proposed the so-called Arab kingdom policy of Napoléon III. Through his reports, his articles in the press, two publications and a substantial correspondance, he exercised considerable intellectual and policy-making influence over the army and the press for the defence of the " Natives " against the " Colonists " who wanted to take their lands and to refuse them the rights of citizenship. One important aspect of his complex personality has not yet been explored: what he calles his " Arab marriage ". This marriage, which has a significant place in his two unpublished autobiographies and in his correspondance, was seen by Urbain as a counterpoint to his political involvement in favour of the Arabs. Celebrated before the Cadi in Constantine in 1841, and not recognized under French law, this relationship was considered only a temporary commitment by the young interpreter. It might well have been a mere " colonial love " if the personality of his young wife Djeyhmouna had not transformed it into a lasting union. The agonizing struggle between two opposing societies, the disapproving gaze of others, the long separations, and the illness and suffering that eventually ended her young life at the age of thirty-five all contributed to reinforce and strengthen their bond. This article examines the story of their relationship as it emerges from information provided by Urbain to his friends about a way of conduct that he wanted to be, and which almost was, exemplary.
