Un teint de Pologne. Recherche d’identité et suavitas dans la Pluie d’été de Marguerite Duras

Résumé

Cet article retrace l'émergence du personnage de la mère dans la Pluie d'été de Marguerite Duras et examine la question de la recherche d'identité ainsi posée par le biais de deux approches d'ordre pragmatique : l'étude de l'emploi des appellatifs et celle de l'art de la transition, qui permettent de rendre compte du caractère paradoxal du problème. L'emploi des appellatifs met en cause l'acte performatif de nommer, lequel fixe dans l'instant une identité tout en présupposant un ensemble de relations à autrui. L'art de la transition, appelé ici suavitas ou transition douce, est associé à un mouvement de transformation continuelle du texte qui implique au contraire l'instabilité de toute identité et de toute relation à autrui.

Abstract

This article outlines the development of the character of the mother in Marguerite Duras's la Pluie d'été, as well as the issue of a quest for identity, by using two pragmatic approaches: an analysis of terms of address and a study of the art of transition. The two approaches illuminate a paradoxical aspect of literary identification. Using a term of address is a performative act of naming which fixes identity while presupposing specific relationships to others. The art of transition, called here suavitasor smooth transition, is linked on the other hand to a movement of continuous transformation of the text, which implies the instability of all identity and all relationships to others.
