Transfert et refoulement dans la théorie psychanalytique : à propos de la notion d'inconscient collectif

Résumé

Comment une idée, même périmée, survi-elle dans le champ culturel? Comment peut-elle changer de registre ou, à défaut, faire l'objet d'un blocage, voire d'un refoulement? Nous nous intéressons au cas d'une notion universellement admise au plan cognitif, mais non pour autant légitimée au plan théorique, celle de l'inconscient collectif. De la fin du XIX' siècle à nos jours, elle subit un transfert de valeur et, d'homogène, devient facteur d'hétérogénéité. Nous l'examinons à partir de la formulation ambiguë qu'elle reçoit en psychanalyse, tout particulièrement dans la confrontation qui mettra aux prises Freud et Jung, et laissera pour toujours divisée l'institution psychanalytique.

Abstract

How can an idea, even when outdated, continue to survive in the field of culture? How can such an idea evolve or, on the other hand, how does it become subject to transference or even repression? We shall discuss the case of an idea universally accepted on a cognitive level yet not generally admitted on a theoretical level: the notion of the collective unconscious. From the end of the nineteenth century to the present day, this idea has undergone a gradual transference of values whereby its connotations have shifted from the implication of homogeneity to that of heterogeneity. We shall examine the ambiguous formulation of this notion in psychoanalysis, particularly the schism it provoked between Freud and Jung, forever dividing the psychoanalytical community.
