Abstract
In Parabole du failli (2013), Lyonel Trouillot pays tribute to the famous Haitian actor Karl Marcel Casséus, who died in 1997. Blending together novel, obituary and poetry, the author attempts to delineate the enigmatic life of the main character, Pedro, an acclaimed actor who writes poetry in secret. Not only do the three genres merge and complement each other within the telling of a single story, they are supplemented by a metafictional discourse that questions the choice of writing style for biography, for the portrayal of an individual, for the historicization of an experience, and for the fictionalization of a life. Beyond the empirical portrait of the artist and Pedro’s life story, what happens in Parabole du failli is that poetry becomes the essential object of a complete biography where the fate of a poet intersects with the outcome of a novel, where the paths of existence and of writing intertwine within the poetic adventure itself.
