Je propose dans cet article de relire une scène canonique des Enfants terribles de Jean Cocteau, un roman au riche réseau intertextuel dont on a reconnu déjà (depuis sa parution, chez Grasset, en 1929) les nombreux emprunts au mythe, à la tragédie et à la poésie. Je montre ainsi que la scène où Élisabeth gave son frère endormi avec des écrevisses n’est pas à interpréter seulement par rapport à une symbolique du rêve, mais également par rapport aux interdictions du Lévitique, qui circonscrivent de manière très imagée les oppositions du pur et de l’impur. En faisant intervenir la théorie de Julia Kristeva sur l’abject, qui se réfère aux travaux anthropologiques de Mary Douglas sur la souillure, je suggère que cette scène centrale des Enfants terribles plonge au coeur de l’inceste dans sa version la plus archaïque. L’intertexte biblique de l’Ancien Testament révélerait donc chez Cocteau le sens caché de l’inceste, qui concerne tout autant la relation impure du frère et de la soeur que l’inceste avec la mère, « mythème originaire du texte biblique » selon Kristeva. De même, l’interdit alimentaire biblique mis au premier plan dans cette scène ne serait pas là seulement pour signaler l’inceste, mais la différenciation même du pur et de l’impur à la base de la « cohérence de la structure culturelle », qui a été démontrée par Mary Douglas. Alors que dans l’édition critique de ce roman dans la Pléiade (en 2006), Serge Linares cherche à atténuer le rapport du roman à la perversion (qui serait selon lui contrebalancé par son rapport à la poésie), je montre quant à moi que si nous sommes dans l’impur chez Cocteau, c’est d’abord parce que nous sommes dans l’ordre de l’hybride, de l’inclassable, de l’indifférencié.
Abstract
In this article I propose to do a close reading of a canonical scene of Les enfants terribles, by Jean Cocteau, a novel with a rich intertextual network that has been already recognized (since its publication by Grasset, in 1929) for its numerous borrowings to myth, tragedy and poetry. I show that the scene where Elisabeth force-feeds her sleepy brother with crawfish could not only be interpreted in relation to the dream symbolism, but also in relation to the prohibitions in Leviticus, which imaginatively define the opposition between purity and impurity. Drawing from Julia Kristeva’s theory of abject, which refers to Mary Douglas’s anthropological essay on defilement, I suggest that this central scene in Les enfants terribles gets us to the heart of incest in its more archaic version. Therefore, the biblical intertext of the Old Testament could illustrate in Cocteau the hidden meaning of incest, which concerns the impure relationship between the brother and the sister as much as the incest with the mother, an original mytheme of the biblical text according to Kristeva. Also, the dietary laws of the Bible featured in that scene would not only highlight the incest, but the difference between purity and impurity, which is the basis of the cultural structure’s coherence, as shown by Mary Douglas. While Serge Linares, in his scholarly edition of the novel in Pléiade (2006), seeks to diminish the novel’s relationship with perversion (which would be for him counterbalanced by its relationship with poetry), I would like to argue that if we are in the domain of the impurity in Cocteau, it is mostly because we are in the domain of the hybridity, the unclassifiable, the undifferentiated.
