Abstract
Saint-Denys Garneau’s oeuvre is mainly composed of seventy or eighty poems written between 1934 and 1938, when he was 22 to 26 years old. In 1937, he published Regards et jeux dans l’espace. Soon after, he gave up writing and dismissed his own work as having failed to fulfill what he considered to be poetry’s defining criterion: truth. Examining the different versions of Regards et jeux dans l’espace and entries from his Journal, in which he judges his own poems, this article tries to discern the essence of this truth as perceived and sought by the poet.
