De la matière et des trous : l’envers du décor de la coopération sino-congolaise contemporaine

Résumé

L’effondrement d’un rêve de développement rutilant est-il un motif littéraire ou artistique sino-congolais ? En regard du fait divers de l’écroulement de « la corniche de Sassou » – vitrine fallacieuse du développement congolais largement financé par des entreprises chinoises – survenu le 8 février 2020, cet article étudie les représentations littéraires et artistiques qui s’attachent à montrer sans fard l’envers du décor et les profondeurs des « amitiés » sino-congolaises. En représentant la vie des mineurs congolais dirigés par les sociétés chinoises ou les entreprises de déforestation menées par les Chinois au Congo, les artistes tentent de dépasser le règne de la « camelote abondante » sino-congolaise en proposant des représentations accrues de la matérialité. Témoignant d’un même souci écologique, les images semblent demander des comptes aux rêves de modernité auxquels l’écrivain Sinzo Aanza et les photographes Sammy Baloji et Lu Guang les confrontent.

Abstract

Could the collapse of a shiny development dream be a Sino-Congolese literary or artistic motif ? Starting from the incident of the landslide on an emblematic cornice of the capital city, nicknamed after the President « Corniche de Sassou » – a fallacious showcase of Congolese development largely financed by Chinese companies – which occurred on February 8, 2020, this article studies the literary and artistic representations which want to show the flip side of the Sino-Congolese « friendships » and investigate their depths and intricacies. By representing the lives of Congolese miners in pits run by Chinese companies or Chinese-led deforestation companies in the Congo, some artists attempt to overcome the reign of Sino-Congolese « abundant junk » by offering increased representations of materiality. Bearing witness to the same ecological concern, the images seem to question the dreams of modernity with which writer Sinzo Aanza and photographers Sammy Baloji and Lu Guang confront them.
