Résumé

Cet article propose un « voyage » à travers le paysage linguistique de la minorité arménienne de Plovdiv, en Bulgarie. Notre questionnement a comme point de départ l’importance de la visibilité de la langue arménienne et de son système d’écriture pour les pratiques identitaires et de mémoire arméniennes dans le contexte multiethnique et multilingue de la ville de Plovdiv. Malgré le fait que cette communauté diasporique soit petite et que la compétence active en arménien soit limitée, la présence de la langue arménienne dans la ville reste visible en raison de la valeur symbolique prestigieuse attribuée à son système d’écriture et de la nécessité de partager la mémoire traumatique du génocide arménien avec un public plus large. Nous analysons ici le paysage linguistique arménien de la ville en observant les monuments officiels, le musée commémorant les victimes du génocide ainsi que le cimetière communautaire local qui montrent l’intérêt des collectivités locales à perpétuer la mémoire collective de la communauté arménienne.

Abstract

This article proposes a “journey” through the linguistic landscapes of the Armenian minority in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. More specifically, our article addresses the importance of the visibility of the Armenian language and its writing system for Armenian memory and identity practices in the multiethnic and multilingual context of the city of Plovdiv. Despite the fact that this diaspora community is small and active competence in the Armenian language is limited, the presence of the Armenian language in the city remains visible due to the prestigious symbolic value attributed to its writing system and the need to share the traumatic memory of the Armenian Genocide with a wider audience. We therefore analyze the Armenian linguistic landscapes of the city by looking at the official monuments, the museum commemorating the victims of the Genocide, and the local community cemetery, and identify in the presence of these elements of inscription of public space an interest of the local Armenian authorities in perpetuating collective memory.
