Abstract
Cohabitation has become an alternative to marriage in family formation in Quebec. Yet we still know very little about its potential effects on child development. In addition, differences between the break-up of a marriage and the break-up of a cohabiting union have rarely been investigated. Working with a representative sample of 1347 children from the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD), we explore the links between union type at child’s birth, family break-up, and school achievement in first grade (as assessed by teachers and cognitive tests). The moderating effect of gender is also investigated. Contrary to what is usually found in North-American research, we find no negative association between being born to cohabiting parents and school achievement in Quebec. Indeed we find small positive associations for girls. Finally, parental separation is sometimes associated with lower academic achievement, but this association varies with union type at birth and gender.
