Les Fantômes de l’Amérique

Résumé

Il s’agit de scruter les fondations inconscientes de l’Amérique, son passé refoulé depuis la désorientation que Christophe Colomb fit subir à ce continent jusqu’au génocide de l’« Indien » qui — son nom l’indique — n’a pas sa place dans le « Nouveau Monde ». Les fantasmes de l’Amérique se voient relayés par un film qui naît à l’endroit même où le rêve d’expansion illimitée d’un pays prend fin : en Californie. La nation américaine naît alors une seconde fois dans son cinéma : Naissance d’une nation de D. W. Griffith laisse voir comment l’homme blanc dépossède l’Amérique jusqu’à ses fantômes noirs.

Abstract

This is an investigation of the unconscious foundations of America, its past, repressed since the disorientation that Christopher Columbus inflicted on the continent and the genocide of the "Indian" who, as his very name indicates, has no place in the "New World". America's fantasies were carried forward by a film created in the very place where the dream of unlimited expansion of the country came to an end, in California. The American nation is reborn in film. D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation reveals how the white man has dispossessed America down to its darkest ghosts.
