Abstract
While commuting, cyclists are exposed to levels of noise potentially harmful for their health. The objective of this paper is to analyze cyclists’ noise exposure variations across bikeway types in Montreal, Laval and Longueuil (Quebec, Canada). Using primary data collected in June 2018 (1,257 km), a generalized additive mixed effects model with autoregressive term (GAMMAR) was built to predict the noise intensity to which cyclists are exposed. During data collection, the mean noise level was 69.3 dB(A). Results show that noise exposure is higher when bike trails are located on arterial roads than on local streets. All other things being equal, a 4 dB(A) gap is measured between the noisiest and the quietest places. Such results could influence urban planners when designing future bikeway networks.
