Espace matrimonial et espace social d’un village québécois : le cas de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli

Résumé

Le village est une unité sociale et spatiale, mais il participe également d'un territoire et d'un peuplement régional. Les relations qu'il entretient avec son environnement le définissent autant que ses propres caractéristiques internes. Une étude de ces relations permet d'évaluer l'insertion d'une communauté villageoise dans son contexte régional. L'analyse de l'évolution de l'espace matrimonial des habitants de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli durant les deux siècles passés sert ici à illustrer différentes phases de l'intégration d'une communauté villageoise dans le peuplement régional.

Abstract

The village is a social and spatial unit, but also belongs to a larger territory and pattern of settlement. It is defined as much by the relations it maintains with its environment as by its own characteristics. A study of these relations leads to an understanding of how the village community is inserted into the regional context. Analysis of the development of the matrimonial space of the inhabitants of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli over the last two centuries illustrates the different phases in the process of integration of a village community into the social fabric of its region.
