Abstract
Health and illness are subjective concepts which vary according to a variety of factors, including one’s sense of cultural origin. Given Canada’s multicultural context, it is important to consider issues of intercultural contact when discussing the representation of health and illness with members of minority groups, as these may be subject to cultural influences including those of the dominant cultural group. Thus, the degree of identification with the culture of origin and with the dominant culture determines the representations subscribed to by members of minority groups. Amongst those who identify with their cultures of origin, a link between the state of health and the cultural and linguistic vitality of their communities is to be noted. Efforts intended to improve the health and well-being of these individuals ought thus to be based on the maintenance of their cultural and linguistic heritage. For their part, health professionals ought to engage in respectful dialogue with their patients regarding the cultural aspects of their representations of health and illness. Such an approach could well contribute to the satisfaction of patients with the care they receive and, at the same time, to the adoption of healthy forms of behaviour.
