Résumé

Jeanne d’Arc, la célèbre Pucelle d’Orléans, a connu un destin historique peu commun. Elle rejoint au panthéon les plus grandes figures de l’histoire française. Qui plus est, l’Église catholique, qui l’avait jadis condamnée, en a fait une sainte en 1920. Le Canada français a découvert Jeanne d’Arc au tournant du siècle par la presse, par une abondante littérature, par le théâtre et par les chansons. Le clergé catholique a fait d’elle un idéal patriotique. Dès lors, son image a été annexée au nationalisme et à la défense des droits linguistiques et religieux des Canadiens français. Le féminisme s’en est aussi emparé, le prénom « Jeanne-d’Arc » s’est popularisé et on lui a érigé des monuments et, dans les églises, on a offert ses statues à la dévotion populaire. Cet article évoque le passage de la figure johannique de la France vers l’Amérique francophone au XIX^e et dans la première moitié du XX^e siècle.

Abstract

Joan of Arc, the famous Maid of Orleans, had an unusual historical fate. She joins in the pantheon the greatest figures of French history. Moreover, the Catholic Church, which had once condemned her, made her a saint in 1920. French Canada discovered Joan of Arc at the turn of the century through the press, an abundance of literature, theater and through song. The Catholic clergy made her a patriotic ideal. From then on, her image was annexed to nationalism and the defense of linguistic and religious rights of French Canadians. Feminism has also taken hold of her, the name «Jeanne d’Arc» has become popular and monuments have been erected and, in churches, her statues have been offered for popular devotion. This article evokes the passage of the Johannine figure from France to French-speaking America in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century.
