L’histoire de la société-soeur de l’Institut canadien de Montréal, la Société des Amis, fait ressortir la trame économique et intellectuelle de la décennie 1840 : l’idée et la réalité du libre-échange. De même que les traités constitutionnels s’étaient imposés en 1791, les traités d’économie politique deviennent incontournables autant chez un Amédée Papineau que chez un Étienne Parent. Comme si on avait identifié une épistémè, une trame de changement.

Abstract

The history of the sister society of the Canadian Institute of Montreal, the Society of Friends, highlights the economic and intellectual fabric of the 1840s: the idea and reality of free trade. Just as the constitutional treaties were imposed in 1791, the treaties of political economy become unavoidable as much for Amédée Papineau as for Étienne Parent. As if we had identified an episteme, a plot of change.
