The article examines the Property & Casualty insurance industry and the evolution of insurance brokerage in the wake of the removal of barriers between the four financial pillars. It also looks at the challenges that lie ahead for the insurance industry following the foray of stronger and better equipped players into this market.

Les coûts reliés aux catastrophes naturelles, quoique élevés, ne semblent pas menacer la santé financière des réassureurs canadiens. Toutefois, le problème le plus aigu au plan des risques catastrophiques est celui des tremblements de terre. L’auteur s’interroge sur les conséquences qu’un séisme de grande magnitude pourrait avoir sur la réassurance. Il tente d’identifier les meilleurs moyens pour faire face au problème. Il en énumère six : des primes acceptables, des franchises en rapport avec la valeur assurée, des sous-limites, certaines restrictions territoriales et certains encouragements fiscaux.

L’Accord de libre-échange nord-américain (ALENA) ne sera pas sans avoir des répercussions sur l’industrie canadienne de l’assurance. Entré en vigueur le 1er janvier 1994, à la suite de sa proclamation par le gouvernement canadien, le traité comporte plusieurs dispositions sur la libéralisation des services financiers, notamment sur les possibilités d’implantation et sur le traitement équitable accordés par chaque pays aux assureurs des pays liés. Cet article présente les marchés d’assurance respectifs des trois pays signataires, le Canada, les États-Unis et le Mexique. L’auteur examine les effets qu’aura ce traité sur notre industrie. Il s’interroge en particulier sur l’ouverture du marché mexicain, après soixante années de protectionnisme. Il anticipe que son accès serait peu significatif à l’égard des compagnies canadiennes, pour trois raisons : l’étroitesse du marché, la forte concurrence d’autres pays et, enfin, l’importance relative que ce marché représente dans les stratégies de développement de plusieurs assureurs canadiens.

The author profiles the loss adjuster, what this profession was like in the 60s and 70s and the qualities it takes to be a loss adjuster today–competence, versatility and a good knowledge of both technical and administrative aspects of the job. He then imagines the loss adjusters of the future: thoughtful, innovative and independent specialists with a solid professional training.

La théorie des coûts de transaction de Williamson est une tentative d’explication économique des phénomènes d’intégration/externalisation des firmes. Une application de cette théorie à l’assurance peut permettre d’obtenir une perspective d’analyse intéressante sur l’intégration/externalisation par une compagnie d’assurance de la fonction risk-management. La question à laquelle répond la théorie de Williamson est alors la suivante : « Quand une compagnie d’assurance doit-elle intégrer l’analyse des risques en son sein, et à l’inverse quand doit-elle l’externaliser auprès d’un intermédiaire spécialisé : la firme de risk-management ?

As Director of Admissions and Training at the lnsurance Brokers Association of the Province of Québec, the author is well-placed to describe the new property insurance program for market intermediaries which entitles students to a Diploma of Collegiate Studies. Mrs. Fortin briefly describes how the program came to be, examines its contents and discusses how well it meets the needs of Québec's property insurance market. In her conclusion, Mrs. Fortin states that this specialized program will give graduates the necessary tools to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.
