Le théâtre socialiste dans le nord de la France avant 1914

Résumé

Le double axe de réflexion induit par la problématique « théâtre et histoire » est intéressant pour aborder le théâtre militant en France : il permet en effet de relever la connaissance fragmentaire dont il est encore l’objet aujourd’hui et d’exposer la spécificité de son répertoire. Pour traiter l’histoire du théâtre et l’histoire au théâtre sous l’angle particulier du théâtre militant, le présent article s’appuie précisément sur la pratique artistique des socialistes dans le nord du pays, à la fin du XIX^e siècle et au début du XX^e. Ce faisant, il débouche sur le questionnement de la pertinence de l’appropriation dramatique et de la transposition scénique de l’événement réel à des fins propagandistes.

Abstract

The two lines of thought produced by the question of "theatre and history" provide an interesting way to tackle the subject of militant theatre in France: indeed in this way the fragmentary knowledge about it can be collected and the nature of its repertoire described. In order to discuss the history of theatre—and history in the theatre—from the specific angle of militant theatre, this article looks at the artistic practice of socialists in the north of the country, at the end of the XIXth and beginning of the XXth Century. In so doing it leads to questioning the relevance of dramatic adaptation and scenic transposition of real events for propagandist purposes.
