The "intuitive" categories of time and space defined by Kant are to all extents and purposes indelibly inscribed in human projects. This is particularly the case with works of art and other objectified representations of collective life. In the purview of literary studies, Mikhail Bakhtin has drawn inspiration from Einstein and the physical sciences to name this spatio-temporal configuration "chronotope". This study is interested in the "images of the city" in contemporary Quebec poetry, and particularly in their chronotopical orientations. This first part discusses the changing conceptions of time and space in Western culture, as well as the Bakhtinian conception of the chronotope. In the second part, the author provides a detailed analysis of Clément Marchand's and Claude Beausoleil's urban poetry, emphasizing the chronotopical dimension of their works, as these are linked to an individual and collective existence.

This article provides a critical review and modeling of the concept of "value creation" from a literature analysis of the business model. The definitions of value creation are studied from the 50 most cited English-language articles whose titles contain value and creation. The analysis reveals five themes: nature of the value created for the customer, value architecture by the company, value perceived by the user, economic sharing between the stakeholders, co-creation of the value with these stakeholders. Our discussion is built around epistemological issues in a pragmatist perspective.

Historians contribute to the collective memory but, because of their use of methodical investigations, their input is different from other contributors. Although they may be engaged citizens, historians must maintain a necessary distance. This is difficult to do in Francophone minority communities. Being marginalised in various ways, the latter are constantly seeking justice and recognition. In their struggles, Francophone minority leaders refer constantly to the community's deep roots in their location and to their heroic struggles. They believe or want to believe that there was always unanimity within the “community”.This article's goal is to understand the relationship between memory and history in Francophone minority settings. To achieve this, the author relies on the work of foreign and Canadian historians who have studied the question and provides recent examples. Partly analytical, the article is also a testimony based on the author's own experiences in French Ontario.

AbstractTranslating modes are linked to historical periods as well as to connected philosophies of history. Among them transhistoricism aims to create a dialogue between distant historical situations, keeping from the past what is still relevant and enlightening both translated and translating worlds. This paper presents several philosophical and literary perspectives on transhistoricism, revisiting the notions of empathy and sacredness and their application for translation studies.

In the tradition of Rosalind Krauss' essay “Notes on the Index” (1986) I want to re-posit the importance of the indexical status of the work of art and look at how Peirce's views of aesthetics, his theory of the sign, and his version of phenomenology, can be useful to our understanding of contemporary works of art. The work of art that emerges from reading Peirce is not a representation of an object in the world but a mode of presentation of experience and in particular feeling. Defined as a complex form of icon, a hypoicon, the work of art is not constrained to mimetic representation but engaged in actively re-interpreting our world and our sense of self, cutting through preconceptions by returning us to the present : presentness, and the possibilities of firstness. Peirce's late discussion on the study of phenomena, phaneroscopy, allows us to understand the work of art both as a part of our experience, and also as giving meaning to our experience : the work of art as a re-staging of the sign on the cusp between possibility and existence.

While translation in Canada has long been subordinated to history and the policies of bilingualism, it only became an academic discipline in its own right in the 1970s. In its early days, translator training took center stage as can be seen from the multitude of training manuals published at the time. Reflections on translation history, theory and criticism began to emerge in the 1990s alongside the consolidation, on the international scene, of Translation Studies as a full-fledged discipline. Translation Studies evolved in Canada with the reinforcement of the theoretical component in the different Master's level programs and the opening of doctoral programs. The creation of the Canadian Association for Translation Studies and the publication of its journal, TTR, sealed the autonomy of the discipline. An analysis of the books published by Canadian translation scholars between 1970 and 2017 will reveal major research interests and their evolution.

The COVID‑19 pandemic has been particularly deadly for older people living in long-term care homes (LTC) and assisted living facilities (ALF) in Quebec. Consequently, many managers and front-line staff witnessed numerous resident deaths. Yet their experiences with end-of-life care and grief remain relatively unexplored. This qualitative study captures the experiences of three managers and four front-line staff working in LTCs or ALFs during the pandemic. Its findings illuminate the emotional challenges brought on by the pandemic due to changed end-of-life and bereavement practices. For some, the metaphor of war closely resembled their experiences. While feelings of helplessness and confusion were expressed, so too were experiences of cooperation and teamwork. Suggestions for practices to support staff and residents at the end of life and following death are explored.

It is widely believed that Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca’s theory of argumentation is vulnerable to the charge of relativism. This paper provides a more charitable interpretation of Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca’s normative views, one that properly considers the historical trajectory of their work and a wider range of texts than existing interpretations. It is argued that their views are better characterized as a form of “contrastivism about arguments” than any kind relativism. This more accurate depiction contributes to ongoing efforts to revive interest in Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca’s work as well as build bridges with trends in contemporary argumentation theory.
