294.More information
For too long, European erudition in New France has been overlooked by Quebec's historiography. Though a few studies have examined the various libraries that make up the Séminaire de Quebec's collection, little is known about the institution's censored books. This article sheds light on an important aspect of the history of the book in Canada: the presence of censored religious litterature in New France. It examines religious heterodoxy at the Collège des jésuites and the Séminaire de Québec, describes how Canada's first scholars kept up with Europe's religious controversies, and considers the extent to which the presence of religious heterodoxy in New France is a matter of truth or fiction.
