Abstract
This prospective study presents a typology of relationship patterns in the period surrounding parental separation. This typology is based on indicators related to the interparental and father-child subsystems. Latent class analysis was conducted on the data for 173 mothers of children aged four to eight. The results brought to light four types of family dynamics, which are distinguished by the length of the parents’ pre-separation relationship and by the presence of a court order for child custody. This typology of relationship patterns in the period surrounding the separation will help to develop appropriate intervention strategies and thereby avoid exacerbating the difficulties that family members may have.
